A BEAUTIFUL garden in the heart of Whalley will come- under the national spotlight next month. ;Film crews from BBC’s “Gar
dener’s World” spent eight hours filming the garden of Mr and Mrs Steve and Carol Cronshaw, at their home Casa Lago, Wood lands Park, in Whalley. . .Every year the couple open the
doors of their garden to the public as part of the National Gardens Scheme (NGA) project, which raises money for: charity. Their ' garden features a variety of beau tiful flowers; two koi ponds, tree^v ferns from all around the world,'--i acers, bamboos, grasses, bananas,' a succulent garden, which also
boasts a black limestone wall and a compact fruit patio. Commenting on last week’s
filming, Carole said;.“It was won derful and I can truly say that I didn’t want the day to come to an: end.’
“The producers from the pro-
. gramme said they were delighted to be filming our garden. They particularly liked our driveway, which has been converted into an appealing planted space. “It is such a big achievement for
; the crews to have filmed and we . are delighted. “We try to maintain the garden as much as possible because we • both work full time and also run
an outdoor garden product busi-' ness.” Casa Lago, which means Lake
House, will be aired on Garden er’s World on Friday, August 6th.
- Several other gardens and allot ments in Clithcroe, Chatburn and other parts of the Ribble Valley will also be shown the same night.

A GREEN boiler fuelled by local wood has been fired up at Girlguid- ; ing UK’s Waddow Hall, near Wad-
j,dington,.to generate heating and hot water. Instead of using oil fuelled boilers to
keep the training and activity centre warm, the newboilerwill use about 270 tonnes of wood chips each year. The special “bio mass”,boiler will cut carbon dioxide emis sions by around 142 tonnes and save thou sands of pounds each year in heating bills. -;In future the boiler’s wood fuel might
be grown, harvested and chipped on the 178-acre site, creating jobs and revenue in the local economy.
The boiler is serving 60 bedrooms and
offices at the 1657 listed manor house, as well as two self-catering facilities. It could also be e.xpanded to serve the remaining self-catering buildings and shop.
: Waddow Hall has provided residential and conference facilities for hundreds of
youth groups since 1927. The project went live thanks to renewable energy awards of £86,014 from the Department of Energy and Climate Change Bio-energy Capital
. Grant Scheme; £46,000 from the Building Research Establishment’s Community Sustainable Energy Programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund; £30.000 from EOF Energy’s Green Fund and £129,530
from a Carbon Trust interest free loan. ' Elizabeth Dear, lead volunteer at Wad
dow Hall, said: “The activity centre is in a unique position to inform hundreds of young people and adults about sustain ability. It is estimated that the installation of the biomass boiler will save Waddow approximately 50% of our carbon usage each year.
’ . . . ‘‘We only use oil at the moment, so the .
savings are huge. We hope in the future to plant our own trees for fuel. A lot of peo ple don’t have the space to grow the wood they burn.” Mark Thompson, EDF Energy’s Green
Fund manager, said: “We are proud to support the renewable energy project at Waddow Hall. Thousands of Girlguiding UK’s members will learn about renewable energy from the project, while benefiting from the new heating system. Girlguiding UK is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and can inspire the wider community to become involved.” Waddow Hall provides residential and
day activities all-year-round for young people throughout the North West. The hall welcomes nearly 12,000 visitors each' year from about 280 different organisa tions. It offers groups five campsites, in door accommodation,-conference facili ties and activities.
