I- v^rJaymes and Jack,.who both at-; j i- tend St Leonard’s Primary School, 'Cf Langho; have been best friends for V the past three years. This summer; the NAS is cel- (• ebrating people like Jaymenes across ‘th .e UK who play I
a huge role in ,t; helping children with autism to
lead happy and healthy lives. ' .“Happiness Heroes’^ is part of
the'NAS’s You Need to Know ; campaign, which highlights how more then 70% of children with i autism in
England.also have a mental health problem; often due •
.to the lack of appropriate support.:' The. scheme aims to commend . people who make a positive differ- - ence by helping to prevent these
; problems from developing in the' first place. ■
- Before starting at St Leonard’s
in September 2007, Jack had ex perienced two years at another lo cal school where he didn’t fit in at all and became very insecure and '
•isolated. From the first day at St Leonard’s,' Jaymes took Jack un-
• def his wing and Jack blossomed ' from being a loner into a child who' ■ loves the company of other chil- -
dren and has the confidence to try ; new things.
'
■ Jack’s mum Kirstie- said: • “Jaymes is very patient with Jack and accommodating of his de mands for things to be a cerain way. When Jack gets overwrought,
.! Jaymes remains calm and isnT fazed by it at all. : “He is very tolerant of Jack’s
need for physical contact and al lows constant hugs and hand hold- ,■ ing, which gives Jack security and confidence,' particularly in new . situations. Jaymes understands -
Jack’s foibles and sensory issues, and never complains if they limit or dictate what they are doing.';. : , “Outside Jack’s family Jaymes is ;
