CHEF and restaurateur Paul Heathcote is helping to combat rising obesity among chil dren by launching a new menu at his Olive Press restaurant in Clitheroe. The new healthy choices include baked
mushrooms, char grilled chicken strips and fresh fruit salads for dessert. All mains come with a selection of optional side orders that includes green vegetables, salad and new po tatoes.
Paul said: “It is important for youngsters to U ' ^
see they can enjoy the food they like, but that treats need to be balanced with something healthy like fresh fruit for dessert and a glass of fruit juice rather than a fiz^ drink. ■ “This isn’t about cutting out any types of
food, so there are still indulgent options like warm chocolate turnover and ice cream, but by offering healthy alternatives I hope our younger diners will learn to make balanced choices when they come to the restaurant and at home too.”-.-^ ! :v Paul has also launched a special “Little Ol

the Ribble Valley is being hit particu larly hard,” he said. “More than half of Ribble Valley households are reli ant on oil or LPG to heat their homes and the soaring oil prices are affecting these households the most.

• .“Ecoliving can suggest many ways to keep the heat in, such as draught proofing, improving insulation in the loft, walls, floors, hot water tank and pipes, and replacing poorly insulated window frames and single glazed win dows. These measures alone could po tentially save you hundreds of pounds every year.” i - But Jonathan can also advise on a range, of methods to generate your own heat, and electricity, methods which are sustainable and cheap. In fact, some could even earn you mon ey, as householders and communi-
ties who install low carbon electricity technology, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, can now be paid for the electricity they generate, even if they
. use it themselves. Under the Government’s Low Car
bon Buildings Programme(LCBP), grants of up to £2,500 are also avail able for installing micro-renewable energy, but Jonathan stresses that it is vital to ensure that the installer is reg istered with MCS, the Microgenera tion Certificate Scheme. Ribble Val ley Borough Council is also offering grants of up to £1,500 under its “Green Scheme”, which can be claimed in ad dition to the LCBP funding. ^ For more information or to arrange

A FAMILY-RUN business is flying the flag for Clitheroe after scooping several awards at a regional competition. Countiystyle Meats, at Clitheroe Auc
tion Mart, took part in the 2009/2010 BPEX Northwest awards for excellence in meat products, which took place at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton. The thriving business, which is run by Alan Beecroft and Heather Cornthwaite, has gone from strength to strength since they started trading from the auction mart only a couple of years ago, sup plying locally sourced produce to the public.
As this competition was the first they have ever entered, they were absolutely delighted to receive four awards from the four prod ucts they put forward. Heather said: “We are absolutely delight
ed that we put four products forward and all four won a prize. With only a few points be tween gold and bronze awards, less than half the sausage entries put forward gained any award at all. Countrystyle Meats was there fore proud to receive two bronze awards in the traditional pork sausage category and the junior sausage maker category.
