PAGE-TURNER: Rob is hoping “Luke and Jon” will prove a success.
“We’ve just sold the French and Ger man rights too so the story is going to be
. translated, which is very exciting, and it should be published in Germany toward the end of the year.” The book has been well received in re
views by authors and critics alike. Author Mai Feet said: “You have a ma
jor find in Robert Williams. It’s the kind of book that stays in the mind way past the final page. He pulls off the brilliant trick of making light of heavy matters without lessening their impact.” • Author Francis Spufford added: “It’s a hell of a thing to accuse a new writer of
■ wisdom, but that’s exactly what Robert Williams’ first novel has. I’d predict great things from him, but I think that tliey’ve already begun.” . After leaving school, Robert went to
the University College of Ripon and York St John where he graduated with a degree in Theology. He then went to work as a librarian at
Witton Park High School in Blackburn before beginning work in Waterstoncs in Manchester. Robert Williams’ “Luke and Jon” is

the world dies every 30 seconds from malaria, - and it can be prevented. The use o f treated nets has been shown to de crease the mortality rate from this disease by 20% and £5 can fund a net which will last for up to three years. Sheila Bailey, chairman
of Blue Ribbon Fundrais ing, said she would like to express her gratitude on
behalf of the committee and UNICEF to all the people who continue to support them so well. She said: “We are in
credibly lucky to be able to host events that are so well attended and so well, sponsored. It enables us to be able to give so much more to UNICEF for specific projects. This event was made possible because of our partner ship with Seasons - we are veiy grateful to them for working so closely with us to organise such an enjoy able, successful evening.” • For details of Blue

ALTHOUGH members of the Blackburn Diabetes Awareness Group presented a light heart ed look at diabetes diagnosis to members of the Ribble Valley group, they still highlighted the serious implications. The presentation looked at
lifestyle which hastens diag nosis and lessons that can be
learnt from having a healthy diet, plenty of exercise and low alcohol intake. It ended by looking at the
role of the specialist nurse in educating those who are diag nosed by providing leaflets, en couraging them to attend the X-PERT patient programme and to join Diabetes UK.
