BMW designer Chris Bangle has taken a lot o f flak down the years. His style is much like an embat tled politician who knows what brickbats will inevitably be head ing their way.
. Bangle stood in the firing line and took the heat for the 7 Series,
, the 5 Series, the 6 Series, the Z4, the X3 and the 1 Series. At every ^
. press launch, he encountered hos- : • tile questioning from people who didn’t ‘get’ the styling. I was one of them. As time goes
by, it’s easier to see what Bangle was trying to achieve and the 1 Se ries is perhaps the most extreme shape of the lot.
; , It always looked a little too
hunched for my tastes, the five doors giving it a ; busy, truncated look, yet with a front engine and rear wheel drive platform, there exists the scope for something very sleek. ' A partial; solution comes with
the introduction of this three-door variant which plays the sports hatch card a little more convincingly. Although the three-door body-
shell possibly offers a degree more stiffness, if you’ve driven a five- door 1-Series you’ll know broadly - what to expect. Eight engines are offered, seven

the bLack pump, the real standout performers in the 1 Series line-up are the • four 2.0-litre diesel en gines. The 116d has 116bhp and 64mpg
economy while the 118d develops 143bhp and yet will still return an average of over 60mpg and get to 60mph quicker than the petrol 116i. The star of the 1 Series range re
mains the 120d, a 177bhp turbod iesel that will get to 60mph in just over 7.6 seconds and still return 57.6mpg. Better still is the 123d with its 204bhp performance and 7s 0-60mph sprint underpinned by ‘ 54mpg economy. Designed to compete in the com

wheel, legroom is shockingly bad and the transmission tunnel means that you won’t ever want to travel piggy in the middle on the rear bench.
BMW recognises this and offers a
neater four-seat configuration at no extra cost. This features two sculpt
ed.rear seats and a central storage compartment rather, than the more commonplace three abreast rear bench.

though the car does look a bit beef ier with the bigger wheels, the rigid sidewalls of the run-flat tyres don’t do a great deal for ride comfort. For the same reason, the firmly- suspended Sport trim level isn’t the one most would choose on typically bumpy British roads. A t the top of the range, mean
while, sits the M Sport model with its lower spoilers and sills, bigger
alloy wheels and M Sports suspen sion. Elsewhere, BMW haS changed
some of the equipment and detail ing. The 1 Series now features an Automatic Start-Stop function to cut fuel consumption. Brake Energy ■ Regeneration to reduce alternator drag on the engine, and a revised kidney grille to improve airflow to the engine.
There’s also a lower front spoiler
and a darker cover for the headlight cluster. At the back the bumper has' been restyled to sit the car lower to the ground and the rear lights have been re-profiled. The 1 Series has a reputation as
a premium product and if you’re ; looking at models like the 120d: and the 130i, they’re certainly not - cheap. What’s less well known is

must also satisfy those de manding better safety, higher quality, lower emissions and classier styling. First impres sions look good. On paper, it looks equipped to tick ail those boxes.,

model, this is again a design shared with Suzuki (their car’s called the Splash) but Vaux-

This is no out dated hand-me-down, the lat est Agila sporting a bang up to date chassis and three engines that are certainly class com petitive at the very least. The line up opens with a .

seat has been deliberately set high to make getting in and out of the car easy, offering a commanding view of the road and taking advantage of that high roofline. The styling is neat and
very well resolved. There’s a certain degree of Mercedes A-Class in the wheel at each corner stance while the rear three-quarter has elements of Renault Modus to it. Overall, the Agila is a very clean and cohesive piece of work. The Agila will need to be
at the top of its game to face down the best in the city car sector. Both Club and Design trim levels are offered with the Club variant delivering basics but little else. It has remote central locking, a CD stereo, front fog lights, the 60/40 split rear seat, electric front win dows and electric heated door mirrors. If you want air-conditioning,
you’ll need to pay for it or get a Design model which also adds 15” alloy wheels, tinted glass and a leather steering wheel. Safety kit includes front and side airbags, ABS and EBA brake assist. The 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre CDTi models are now badged ecoFLEX to denote their, fuel effiecency but they aren’t altered in any way. : The A g ila is coming equipped to do battle, with big car features such as optional
:ESP stability control and four . airbags. It will certainly plump Vauxhall’s bottom line up a bit better than the old Agila, a car ,
