JACOB’S ASTAR OF THE SLOPES
PAGE45 Blues gaffer facing tough schedule
have to be ruthless
PANIC is a word far from the mind of Peter Smith at the moment. Despite four straight defeats,
including Tuesday night’s exit from the UniBond Challenge Cup, confidence is still running through the veins of the Clitheroe boss. However, he does feel his
players need to be more ruth less in front of goal if they are to begin climbing the table. The Blues suffered a 4-1
reverse at home to Trafford on Saturday, prior to the midw^k 2-1 cup loss at near neighbours Rossendale United. But afterwards, Smith said:
“We’ve got to try and kill teams off when we are on top. “We’re creating chances,
there’s no problem at all in that department, but we have to be more ruthless in front of goal and start putting away a larger percentage of these chances. “Luck has seemed to have
deserted us in these past few weeks - 1 don’t like to keep say-

ing that, but it seems to be the width of a post, or the run of a ball that is going against us time and again. “We have three massive
games coming up in the next few weeks, and while on paper they may look daunting, a good performance and a point or two will bring that confi dence flooding back.’’ That runs of fixtures begins
with a trip to Curzon Ashton’s Tameside Stadium on Satur day (kick-off 3 p.m.). There then follows a trip to
Kellamergh Park on Tuesday evening to face AFC Fylde in the Lancashire Co-operative Challenge Trophy (kick-off 7- 45 p.m.). And with league leaders FC
Halifax Town coming up on the horizon, the Blues need to find their ruthless edge sooner rather than later. Saturday’s defeat to Trafford was not helped by the fact the
Blues found them selves 3-0 down at half time, and with a mountain to climb. And Smith added: “We just
weren’t good enough in the first half. “We conceded a penalty
after eight minutes and it went downhill from there. “We brought a few young
lads into the team but they are not to blame, it was a team effort and we just weren’t good enough. “However we came out firing
in the second half and were by far the better side - it was the same story on Tuesday, but we can’t keep giving teams a head start. “We only seem to be turning
■ up for, the second half of games, and that has to change if we are to turn our fortunes around.” Clitheroe look likely to be
without Jason Jones and Alan . Coar for Saturday’s game with Curzon Ashton, while Robert Grimes is also struggling.
DOUBTFUL FOR CURZON TRIP: Jason Jones K) Super Sabden!
