All smiles at Mytton Fold Golf
THE Ladies’ Open at Mytton Fold was won by a mix of home duo Car ole Maher and Allison Nuttall and
Wilpshire’s Jill Harris. The trio are pictured [right] receiving
their award from lady captain Maureen Board (second from right). Glorious weather greeted the club for
the event, and, in a high-scoring com petition, an excellent 88 points was the winning score. A second Mytton Pold/Wilpshire
team of Board, Jean Sanderson and Barbara Hindle took the runners-up slot, some 14 points in arrears. M3rtton’s Pauline White teamed up
with Barbara Newton (Wilpshire) and Barbara Waring (Darwen), taking the final podium position with 72 points. Even the nearest the pin competition

Greenup shines again in Assheton Cup
THE Assheton Cup competition for past captains and presidents at Clitheroe Golf Club found Denis Greenup in his usual sparkling form. A total of 38 points gave
Greenup a four-shot margin over captain Alf England. Saturday’s Medal found Bill
Wood back on the rostrum after winning a card play-off with the in-form Mike Gibson. Both only dropped two shots on
the back nine to finish with nett 69s, but Wood took the Division One prize. Out in two over, it looked like
the wheels had come oft for Peter Dunlop when he recorded a triple bogey on the 15th, but he recov
ered well to score a nett 68 for the Division Two prize. The recent dry spell resulted in
lightening fast greens for Sunday’s Invitation Fourball, but the home club’s Nigel Fitton and guest A. Young had no problem in return ing 41 points. The duo got the nod after a four
way play-off courtesy of three birdies on the back nine. Alan Gillespie and P. Bird set
tled into second place as they also produced three birdies on the return leg. Dennis Underwood found a
steady partner in Mike Cotton, but they were unfortimate to find only one point on the last hole when the extra point would have
elevated them to first prize instead of fourth. Big Bill Wood and D. Eckersley
took the best gross. The Mixed Seniors Open Four-
ball was a triumph for Clitheroe’s Mr and Mrs Mike and Sue Gib son. No strangers to the winners
enclosure, the Gibsons finished with a flourish and 41 points for first prize. Orville and Barbara Hudson
missed out on the 17th but kept their cool to win fifth prize with 39 points, The Best Gross went to birth
day boy Ted Speak and his play ing partner E. Wilson. Jonathon Mitchell came out on
top in the Junior Medal, his nett 70 being four too good for second placed Ross Dent. James Mulli gan had the Best Gross.

Mixed fortunes
THERE were mixed for tunes for Clitheroe as rac quets were dusted off for the first matches of the season. Clitheroe A drew
against Springfield in a match filled with long games. A good result at 9-9
could easily have gone the locals’ way as they narrowly lost two games 17-16 and 15-14. The B team were
defeated away by a young Clayton Crusader
team, while the C team clocked up a convincing 16-0 home victory over Springfield D. The team welcomed
back Dave MacKenzie, who brought a sound dose of tactics, and Chantelle More who brought energy and style.

IN their first game of the season, Clitheroe performed well against a slightly under-strength Burnley team. The Ribble Valley outfit started
strongly from the off and when Jack Thomas moved the ball out wide to pace man Will Murray, there was only going to be one outcome as he out-ran the defence to score an excellent try in the comer. Prom a Jake Alston break, Maddie
Paige fed Courtney Stanton, before Murray scored another fine try. Burnley responded with two well-
worked tries of their own before Jack Creswell grabbed Clitheroe’s third and Max Blewitt barged over from short range to grab a fourth. That was soon followed by a fifth
Rugby
courtesy of Sam Hill before Oliver Mur ray, not to be out-done by his brother, ran the length of the field to score the best try of the game. With Burnley tiring. Josh Sanderson
exploited some weak Burnley tackling, feeding the ball to Murray, who sealed his hat-trick and a Clitheroe win by seven tries to five. All age groups from U14 (Year 9)

Waddington progress
Skipton Town .................. 3 Waddington.................... 4
WADDINGTON progressed in the Craven Cup after a testing tie. The locals took the lead through
Chris Brown, who smashed home from six yards. Skipton started to come into the
game, but some neat inter-passing led to a second goal. In reply, Skipton were awarded a free
kick on the edge of the area, and Shane Dwyer stepped up and hit a shot, hard and low to make it 2-1 at the interval. Waddington squandered a number of
chances after the break, but with 20 minutes remaining. Lord pounced onto the ball to fire home. The hosts pulled one back when a 30-
yard shot squirmed into the net, but Waddington sealed the win late on. A throw-in found Simon Holden
down the right, and he got beyond the defence before firing in a fourth.
Football Skipton pressed and were awarded
with a soft goal in the dying seconds. Man-of-the-match was Ibrahim
Erashin. Waddington’s next game is at Twit
ter Lane on October 3rd in the North ern Plant Hire Trophy, kick-off 1-30 p.m. Waddington are looking for a first
team goalkeeper, please contact Mark Harrison (07950330192).

Precious point taken
Long Lee Juniors........... Grindleton......................
1 1
GRINDLETON made the journey to last season’s champions Long Lee Juniors on Saturday and with a strong squad to choose from had high hopes of causing an upset. The locals started well and caused
the Keighley outfit some early worry ing moments with debutant Tim Williams and Charlie Jackson linking up together well down the right flank. Fifteen minutes into the game, a spell
of Grindleton pressure was rewarded when a huge Dobson throw was headed on by Danny Sharpies into the roof of the net. At the other end Williams bravely
blocked a full bloodied shot and a strik er narrowly failed to convert another cross from the left. It was no surprise when the home team’s striker hit an
unstoppable shot into the top comer to restore parity. Grindleton’s response was to domi
nate the rest of the half and they very nearly took the lead again when man- of-the-match Matt Doherty picked up the ball in midfield after Walker had dispossessed the Long Lee captain. He swayed and shimmied through
two challenges but with only the goal keeper to beat, dragged his shot wide. The second half was as evenly con
tested as the first, but with Long Lee having the majority of chances. Yet it was Grindleton who had a goal bizarrely ruled out just seconds after the kick off, nobody quite knowing the referee’s reasoning. Ten minutes later Long Lee’s pacy
striker was left one-on-one after beating Taylor to the ball for the first time that afternoon, but saw his shot tipped around the far post by Mashiter.
