promise, and will hopefully continue to develop their skills at the club. In the senior competitions,
the men’s singles was won by the evergreen and ever-present Derek Parrott, now a four-time winner. Parrott defeated another for
mer champion, Paul Ainger. Parrott won in two closely-
fought sets, plasring the more consistent tennis, and finding the corners of the court with precision. Ainger’s monster serve
slightly let him down on this occasion, but he nevertheless played some great shots to make the match a fine specta cle. In the women’s singles, Jen
nifer Hblgate defeated Marie Bennett in two sets. Bennett played some nice
shots, but Holgate ran out a convincing winner and worthy champion. This was the fourth succes
sive year that Holgate has tri umphed in the competition. The men’s doubles was won
by Mick Dewhurst and Phil Mileham, who beat Derek Par rott and Andy Todd. Parrott, fresh from his sin
gles victory earlier, continued to play his normal hard-hitting game, with Todd punishing any loose shots from Dewhurst and Mileham at the net. To be fair, there were not
many of those, as Dewhurst and Mileham complimented each other’s skills well to make the winners they needed.
In the ladies’ doubles, Jen
nifer Holgate and Helen Ran dle beat Marie Bennett and Mary Brass, giving Holgate her second title of the after noon. Another keenly-fought and
competitive match saw a sec ond runners-up trophy. In the mixed doubles, new
comer Karen Huddart and Phil Mileham beat Jennifer Holgate and Chris Donald, also a new member this season. Huddart’s rapier-like fore
hand winners and hard serving made the difference, despite Holgate’s solid ground strokes and great serving. Holgate and Donald played
very well, and there was little between the pairs at the end of the day. Apart from the excellent ten
nis, club members enjoyed a barbeque prepared by Peter Bell. There was also a bouncy castle for the youngsters, to round off a successful day and season for the club. This rounded off a good year
for the club. Clitheroe Tennis Open A
team managed to avoid relega tion from the top flight by the skin of their teeth, following promotion last season, and the Open B team gained promo tion to Division Two. In the Mixed Doubles
League, while the A Team were relegated to Division Two, the B Team gained promotion to Division One, meaning that the club will still have a team in the top divisions of both the open and mixed leagues for 2010.

Storming to victory
Clitheroe ....................... 45 Valeof L u n e lV ............. 3
CLITHEROE stormed to a con vincing victory against Vale of
Lune on Saturday. The hosts again came out of the

blocks firing, and after the initial exchanges were looking good to put some points on the board. That pressure eventually told and
Lafranceschina took the ball through the Vale back line after a series of driv ing mauls and rucks from the forwards and some excellent handling from the backs. The conversion was missed but the lead was Clitheroe’s. The Ribble Valley side continued to
their advantage further when O’Connor finished off some great interplay between backs and forwards which saw the scoreboard tick onto 19-0 with just 25 minutes gone. But Clitheroe suffered a double blow
when Watson left the pitch with a groin injury which was followed by Vale’s first points of the game from a penalty. After the interval, open running

Clitheroe II ..............41 Blackpool I I ..............12 THE Cavaliers bounced back from a
serious reverse the previous week, to win with something to spare against a tenacious Blackpool outfit. Skipper Simon Rawstron’s troops
were good value for a seven-try feast on a glorious afternoon at sunny Little- moor. However the maroons, still smarting
from last week, were in no mood to mess about. So much so they had scored two tries
inside the first quarter and another before the interval, with only one in
reply. As usual, the pack were doing the
grunt and groan hard yards, setting up the back line to apply the coup de grace. Inside centre Dave Fairhurst, scrum
half Ben Rigby and outside half Lee Harris all dotting down over the white
wash. There was just the one conversion
however, for Bill Thatcher to put the town team 17-5 ahead at the break. Scorers in the second half were; locks
Mark Piercy and Mark Jackson, hook er Aaron Atkinson and another for Lee Harris, a couple more conversions from the trusty boot of Thatcher to cap his man of the match performance and the game was wrapped up. This Saturday Clitheroe seconds

their first outing of the season, away to Skipton, and despite a first half lead they succumbed to well-organised opponents. Man-of-the-match Brad Wright -
Clitheroe’s new captain - performed admirably and gave his side balance while Ben Rushworth capped a fine performance with an impressive try after running 70 metres. • Unfortunately, Clitheroe couldn't quite keep up the intensity in the sec ond half and Skipton came back with some endeavour, scoring quickly after the break. Further scores from Skipton took the
game away from Clitheroe but they plugged away to the end.

Clitheroe Senior Colt’s second league fixtm-e of the season. Irrespective of the final score, the
Colts provided a fine spectacle for the large crowd. In the opening minutes Vale domi
nated the game and it was only when they’d scored two tries in quick succes sion that Clitheroe awoke from their slumber. As the game ebbed away from
Clitheroe the lads didn’t give in and much to the teams credit they managed to get on the scoreboard in fine style. Stephen Matthews capped off some
sion for good measure. The Colt’s next game will be at home
against Bolton on October 4th and Clitheroe RUFC welcomes any players wanting to come along and give rugby a try. Anybody interested should call Bob Wilkinson on 07962 099935.

RIBCHESTER’S Jacob Lutwyche won the Under 8s ski summer race league series at Chill Factore in Trafford Park, Manches ter.
The eight-year-old won
all four of the slalom events run during the course of the summer period, and is one of a group of young top skiing talents being groomed for the future. Split into different age
groups, each race was a special slalom consisting of two timed runs down a prepared course, and the winners were those with the fastest aggregate time over the two runs. More than 70 skiers
Brown, Jacob’s instructor and the head coach for the Chill Factore race team, was absolutely delighted with Jake’s per formance. He said: “Jake has
been working hard during our training sessions and is now starting to become a technically strong and impressive young skier. • “We will expect him to
be competing at a high level in the years to come.” Chill Factore is now
UK national training centre at Chill Factore, while the British Dis abled Ski Team will also use the venue for training ahead of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.
