AFTER years of waiting, playtime fun is finally in store for children in

Clitheroe. The long-awaited revamp of Salthill

Play Area is set to go ahead after a cash boost of £47,390 from Lancashire County Council. The move is part of a £1.2m. scheme

to build new play areas across Lan cashire between 2008 and 2011. Eight projects were funded earlier this year and there was just enough money left over to fund one more play area. Those who had been unsuccessful

were invited to bid again - and the Tower Hill Youth Association, of Clitheroe, scooped the cash to breathe new life into the old-fashioned park. . County Coun. Mark Perks, cabinet

member for young people, said: “I was delighted that we could fund another play area out of the allocated cash for Year Two of Playbuilder and I’m sure that the children of Clitheroe will be equally pleased. “Through this initiative we and our

partners want to provide a network of adventurous play areas across the whole coimty that will encourage good old-fashioned outdoor play area.” Under the plans, the new park ■will

include climbing ropes, a log fortress/lookout, a tower slide and a climbing feature made from locally quarried stone. Community volunteer Mr Melrose

Diack MBE, who for years has been campaigning for state-of-the-art play facilities at the run down park, has wel

of hotel fire CLASSIC rock and blues band Freebird will play at a charity darts night being held to support the ■victims of the Swan and Royal Hotel fire. Tony and Joanne

Ridgeway, licensees at The King’s Arms, had booked the popular band to play at their pub on Bawdlands, Clitheroe. But after discovering

local darts team had ral lied round to organise a blind mixed doubles char ity night in aid of the Ewan and Royal disas

ter fund”, they offered to pay the band to play there instead. The charity darts

comed the news. He said: “It’s been an uphill battle, but thanks to the resi dents and the Tower Hill Youth Action Group, we are extremely delighted to be getting this amount of money to put some new equipment there. Ribble Valley Borough Council has

contributed £1,500 to the scheme and will look after its upkeep. Coun. Robert Thompson, chairman of the council’s community committee, said: “We’re delighted to support this scheme, which gave this popular play

area a new lease of life after 25 years.” The new play area is being designed

in collaboration with children, mums and dads, local people and councillors. The equipment will be adapted for

use by children ■with disabilities too, and sited so that as many children as possible can reach it on safe walking/cycling routes. Our picture shows local children,

parents and campaigners celebrating the cash injection to breathe new life into Salthill Play Area. (A090909/4)

Countdown has begun to Mayor’s TV debut

THERE are just six days to go until Ribble Valley Mayor. Coun. Beverley Jones makes her small screen debut. On Wednesday afternoon she will appear as one of the contestants on the

cult Channel Four show Countdown. The show is due to be broadcast at 3-

25 p.m. on September 30th when view ers will be able to see how well the bor ough's first citizen did.

Since recording the show Coun.

Jones has remained tight-lipped about how well she performed, but she is using her appearance to help raise funds for her two mayoral charities.

evening was organised after a huge blaze at the Swan and Royal Hotel earlier this month destroyed much of the historic inn and left its landlord and landlady Terry and Carol Joy totally devastated. A keen darts player

herself, landlady Carol had always supported the local darts league. The event will be held

at the St Michael and St John’s Sodal Club, Lower- gate, on Friday, October 2nd, starting at 8 p.m. All darts players are

welcome and for further information contact either John Schofield on 07970 154917, Carl Bar- low on 07821 122794, Linda Waring on 07958 133950 or Andy Cornwall on 01254 814740.
