Champs bounce back in cup final

lit- 'j-r

' Rimington..................... .4 Colne United......................2 RIMINGTON put aside the dis appointment of going out of the President’s Cup on penalties to Enfield to secure an East Lan cashire League and Craven Cup double under the floodlights at Bamoldsvrick. The champions were much the

better side in the first half, and it was surprising they only led 1-0 a t ; half-time, as they passed the ball around well, with Walmsley and McLean dominating in midfield, and Heslop’s strong running caus ing problems down the left. He created chances for both

Lloyd and Penman, but they just failed to find the net, and it was the unlikely source of Walker who came closest with a far post header, but Colne’s keeper made a brilliant save. _ Rimington took the lead when

Walmsley bravely charged down a clearance, and even though the keeper saved his effort, Heslop was on Hand to score. Colne came out in determined

mood for the second half, and forced the villagers back. They equalised when a near post cross was not dealt with, and the

V

striker was on hand to slam the ballhome. This jolted Rimington into

upping the tempo, and they began to open up the Colne defence. ‘ Dinsdale was fouled close to the

bye-line, and Heslop’s free kic was headed home by the soaring Lloyd. It was Heslop’s last contribution

as he had run himself into the ground and was replaced by Green, who almost made it 3-1 with a run and shot, which was saved by the keeper’s legs. ■ Penman did make it 3-1 when he

latched onto the ball and sprinted into the area before calmly picking his spot. Colne were handed a lifeline

when the linesman adjudged the winger to have been tripped in the area, and they duly converted the spot kick. L Rimington were not going to be

denied though, and a great move down the right ended with a cross to the far post, where Green arrived to score. It was a goal worthy of winning

any game, and it was only what Rimington deserved. Terry Braithwaite was full of

praise for his players for going through a full season unbeaten -

bar the penalty shootout defeat. The last time they were beaten

was November 3rd, 2007, and they will look to extend that record next season. ; • RIMINGTON have organ

ised a special legends fixture. The club are looking for players

who have played under current manager Teriy Braithwaite since the turn of the millennium to turn out under legend status.

. . The legends will play against

Rimington’s current crop on FA Cup Final day. May 30th, kicking- off at 11-30 a.m., with lunch served after the game, and every one invited to watch the cup final at the Kings Arms, Clitheroe. ■ Anyone interested can contact

Braithwaite (428190) or, alterna tively, Graeme Kershaw (07846561368).' During the game there will be a

collection, with proceeds going towards the injured players fund. The club are also holding a

cabaret evening on Friday, June 5th at the Catholic Social Club, Lowergate, where comedian Nor man Price will be performing. Tickets are £10, with supper included.
