I Dibb inspires first victory R

APTAIN Peter Dibb inspired Clitheroe'to their first league win of

the season with a superb unbeaten 91.- the highest indi vidual knock of the day. Taking on Cherry Tree at

Chatburn Road, the locals made 180-7, with Dibb the mainstay of the innings. And the Blackburn side were

Xi i

dismissed for just 122 in reply, with the wickets shared. Clitheroe’s day started

inauspiciously, with John Green bowled by Daniel Lord for five, and professional Paul Turner could only score a sin- gle before being skittled by Robert Ince. However, opener Neil Bolton is and Dibb set about rebuilding

i the innings, before the former i skipper became Lord’s second victim for 18, including one sbc.

4vl Dibb struggled to find sup- port, losing Josh McDowell (7)

>^and Andrew Pearce (2), but Mark Preston proved a valu- able foil. He made 25 to help up the

I

total, before Andreas Sudnik had his caught by professional Darren Broom. Sudnik then bowled Dan

Glover (2), and Dibb ran out of overs as he chased his century, the innings closing on 180-'7, with Tree conceding 28 in extras. In reply, Clitheroe got about

the visitors from the off, and Lvickets fell at regular intervals. Five bowlers claimed wick

ets, with three run outs sealing Tree’s fate. Jack Houldsworth sent

opener Scott Friend back with out scoring, caught behind by McDowell, and his partner Nigel Robbins was trapped in front for just nine. Professional Broom tried to

steady things, but both Joe Bolton and Mark Friend failed to score.

Jon Baldwin backed up the

pro, but when Broom was bowled by Ben Dowling for 27, the writing was on the wall. Baldwin finished unbeaten

on 41, but ran out of partners as Clitheroe celebrated their first success. On Saturday they will look

to back that up at Read, before entertmning Blackburn North ern on Sunday, wickets pitched 1-30 p.m.’ 'HALLEY slumped to the bottom of the league after being on

the receiving end of Barnoldswick’s first win of the season. The visitors earned a 42-run

victory, thanks to a fine all round display from Pakistani professional Ijaz Ahmed junior. Ahmed top-scored with 31 as

Bamoldswick finished on 142- 9 in their rain-affected 43 overs, before taking five wick ets as the locals were rolled over for 100 with just over two overs in hand. Whalley skipper Richard

Palmer won the toss and inserted the locals, and Liam Bedford and Jamie Oldfield gave Barlick a solid founda tion, sharing 32 for the first wicket. The partnership was ended

when Oldfield (13) was stumped by James Galling off Declan Fitzhenry, but Bedford and Ahmed moved to 50 before the former was out for 19, caught by Stephen Booth off home pro Vinit Indulkar. Ahmed and Matthew Nut

ter produced the best stand of the day, putting on 43 as they closed in on three figures, but the pro, after a patient knock, was caught by Gregory Jones off Fitzhenry for 31, off 59 balls. Indulkar and Fitzhenry

made inroads into the Barnoldswick innings, as Luke

Hodgson (12) and Paul Beech (7) fell, before Nutter was run out by Indulkar after a 35-ball' 31, including two fours and a six.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ The innings closed on 142-9,

with Indulkar the pick of the bowlers with 4-38 off 10 overs, while Fitzhenry recorded 3-68. Crucially, Bamoldswick saw

off Indulkar early in Whalley’s reply, Ahmed inducing a catch, taken by Nutter, for just eight at 15. For the addition of one more

run. Palmer was out Ibw to Zahid Iqbal. Lee Kearsley and Martin

Davies took the score to 40 before the in-form Kearsley was adjudged out leg before to Iqbal for 18. ■ Ahmed claimed four more

wickets, while George Braith- waite removed Davies, the fifth man out for 24 at 61, and it became a case of whether Barnoldswick could claim the bonus points. That they did, as Ahmed

finished with 5-38 from his 20 overs, while Iqbal claimed 3- 21.

On Saturday, Whalley are at

Edenfield, before entertaining Oswaldtwistle Immanuel on Sunday, wickets pitched at 1- 30 p.m.

EAD missed out on the chance of going top of The Veka Ribblesdale

League when they were beaten by 27 runs by new leaders Bax- enden on Saturday. In a game reduced to 39

overs a side by the weather, Read suffered at the hands of Ian Austin. But they then got back into

the game and gave themselves a chance of going top of the table. Baxenden batted first and

lost openers Galium Wadding- ton (17) and professional Babar Naeem (28) to catches

behind the wicket by Kyle O’Connor, off Warren East- ham and professional Jon Har vey respectively. That only paved the way for

Austin to come in and help himself to 72, including two sixes and 10 boundaries, before being bowled by Harvey for 72. Eastham then accounted for

Mark Rishton (0) and Lewis McIntosh (21), before former Lowerhouse man Simon Payne was run out for 14 in a late- innings chase for more runs. Harvey stepped in to remove

Gary Sudworth (0) and David Crenshaw (9), and David Tay lor was run out for one as Bax- enden’s innings closed at 169-9. Harvey finished with 4-55

from 20 overs, and Eastham’s reward was 3-70 from 12. Read were in trouble early in

their reply as openers Nick Marsh and Michael Whalley went cheaply. Harvey started a revival

with 22, 18 in boundaries, before being bowled by Austin. O’Connor (9) and top scorer

Chris Holt (30) kept the runs flowing. And following the departure

of Joe Marshall and Andrew Turner, who both scored two, Andrew Rushton and Eastham stepped up the pace in a bid to steer Read to victory. Rushton scored 26 and East

ham 20 as both hit two sixes, but when they were out, the game was up for Read. Read were eventually all out

for 142, with just under four overs of their reply remaining. The result leaves them 10

points behind Baxenden, tied in second spot with former leaders Earby. Read s ta r t their double-

header weekend by entertain ing Clitheroe on Saturday, before making the short trip to Padiham on Sunday.

IBBLESDALE Wan derers were crushed by 110 runs by Padiham.

Kashif Siddique’s century

helped steer the Arbories side to fourth place in the table after fivegames. The Padiham professional

plundered eight sbees and eight fours on his way to 101, before being caught by Martin Peel off the bowling of Gary Hunt. He received valuable early

support from Abdul Saddique, who helped himself to 43 in a match reduced to 30 overs per side by the weather. Saddique eventually depart

ed, bowl^ by Ian Britcliffe, but then his brother Umar took up the challenge with an unbeaten 39.

Skipper Anthony Hall fin

ished unbeaten on 10 as the Padiham innings closed on 196- 2.

Siddique the batsman then became Siddique the bowler as Ribblesdale were skittled for just 86 inside 29 overs. Wickets fell at regular inter

vals as the professional went on to take 6-38 off 14.4 overs. He claimed the top two of

John Rain (2) and Alistair Marsh (13), before going on to add the scalps of Craig Hall (3), Hunt (0), Mick Clarkson (1) and last-man Marcus Pratt (1). But it was anything other

than a one-man show, as Naveed Ashraf also finished with 4-39 from his 14 overs as the two bowled unchanged. He started by removing top-

scorer Robert Lloyd, caught by Lee Anderson for 27. And then Ashraf went on to

add the wickets of Peel (9), Henry Kay (17) and Barry Spencer (0). Wanderers have a double-

header weekend ahead of them. as they entertain Settle on Sat urday before^ travelling to Earby on Sunday.

Chatburn slip Cobras start season in style

to seven-wicket away defeat

CLITHEROE Cobras Under 11s A got the league season off to a winning start at home to Oswaldtwistle. The visitors won the

toss and elected to bat, and George Young took two early wickets for the Chatbum Road side that put Ossie on the back foot. They never really

recovered, and despite only one further wicket falling to Josh “Monty" Bristol, the rest of the Clitheroe bowlers were very accurate, and gave nothing away. The Hyn- dburn side finished the innings with a net score of 15. ■ The Cobras made light

work of the run chase. Jack Burton set about

the Ossie bowling, hit ting 24, ably supported by George Oliver. Matt Driver and

Monty continued the good work, taking the score to 68 after eight overs. Young backed up his

bowling prowess, scoring 18 in a partnership of 31 with debutant Danny Sumner. At the end, Charlie

Dewhurst and George Houldsworth saw the Cobras home to a con vincing 103-run win. The team backed up

that league win by coast ing to victory in their cup semi-final against Baxenden. Cobras won the toss

and elected to bowl, and Baxenden got off to a

steady start, making 10 off the first two overs. But as soon as Driver

and Bristol took the ball, things changed. Driver taking 2-1 in his three overs, and Bristol taking 3-2 off the same. Clitheroes bowling and

fielding was superb throughout and they fin ished with 6 Baxenden scalps and the visitors only managing 29 runs. Clitheroe’s reply start

ed well, and all the lads contributed. Bristol top scored with 21, including a four and two sixes, with Houldsworth and Young also hitting double fig ures. Clitheroe made 75 in

their innings, outclassing Baxenden in every department.

Meanwhile, Clitheroe

Cobras Girls began their season with an impres sive victory over the Cobras Under 9s Boys. Batting first, the boys

managed a score of 135, with runs from the bat at a premium, and extras, contributing heavily in the blustery conditions. In reply, the girls, bat

ting cautiously, inched closer to the winning line, with the game in the balance until the final ball as they held their nerve to win. Any girls interested in

learning how to play cricket are welcome to attend the Cobras Girls’ training sessions a t Clitheroe CC every Thursday, between 6 and 7 p.m.
