hangs in the balance

by Duncan Smith

• PRESERVED as a significant architec- itural landmark, or razed to the ground, to make way for new houses.- the fate of Clitheroe Community Hospital hangs in the balance tonight. : ■ :

Full story: page 2

■ - Almost 140 years old, the hospital was built as Clitheroe’s workhouse, but over the years has become a landmark building a t the

Chatbum Road gateway to the town. Now its future is in doubt as Ribble Val

ley’s planning committee meets to consider ain outline application to demolish the old hospital buildings and erect 52 new homes on the site.

" I t comes from East Lancashire Primary Care Trust (PCT), which is set to build a new £12m. hospital on the greenfield site next door, replacing the outdated hospital and enhancing the services it provides. .

surplus to requirements. .. As a public body the PCT has a legal obli
