Tree has its roots in dinosaur days
TO th e u n e d u c a te d eye i t . m ig h t n o t lo o k mu ch , b u t Andrew Richards’ “dinosaur tree” is really something spe
cial. And this Sunday (May 24th)
you can see it for yourself when Andrew and his.w.ife, Dorothy, open their wonderful Clayton-le- Dale garden to the public under the National Garden Scheme (NGS). Andrew’s tree - a Wollehai pine _
- was a birthday gift from his wife and is one of theyvorld’s rarest plants, a survivoV;from pre-his- toric times. In 1994 a young park • ranger was exploring a remote region of the Wollemi National Park, west of Sydney, Australia, when he noticed a group of trees he did not recognise. He gathered a few leaves and took them back to Sydney where astonished sci entists found they did not come from any tree known to be alive today - but they did match fossils of trees that flourished with the dinosaurs. Just 43 of the trees were found and their exact loca tion kept top secret, but propoga- tion work began and now, 15 years on, a few young trees are available to buy. The dinosaur tree is just one of
many attractions in Andrew and Dorothy’s garden, which they are opening under the NGS for the fourth year. You can find it a t Greenacre, Ribchester Road,

rare “dinosaur tree” (s)
Clayton-Ie Dale (BBl 9EE) and it
will.be open from 1-30 to 5 p.m. on Sunday and again on Satur day, July 25th. Admission is £3 for adults (children free) and all of the money from visitors goes to charity, 75% to NGS charities and 25% to Vitalise, a charity that provides holidays for people of all ages with physical disabili ties. Homemade teas and refresh ments are available. The couple

A PARTY of 21 appropriately dressed ramblers gathered a t the main car park at Gargrave on a day forecast with heavy showers. James Jolly had planned a route that followed
the Pennine Way over Harrows Hill where there was a 360 degree ■view of the area. Crossing Esh- ton Moor, the group picked up the River Aire and walked alongside this to the village of Airton. They then climbed Kiln Hill to the village of
Calton and lunch was taken at the stream a t Cat- ton Gill Syke, after which field paths were followed into Winterburn. Passing Winterbum Grange the climb went east, then turned south west skirting Scamher Hill to Friars Head. ■ A track took the walkers over Brockabank bridge, alongside Eshton Beck, finally walking through Gamshers Wood, to enjoy the display of forget-me-nots, on the way back into Gargrave at the end of 10 miles. The weather had managed to stay mainly fine,
with only an occasional light shower, and those who had turned out were very appreciative of this. Mr Jolly, also led a Wednesday evening local
walk from Chatburn which attracted 19 walkers. Starting from the parish church, and walking through the village, they crossed the A59, and the old Roman Road, following the footpath on Wor- saw Hill past Warren Hill, where a large number of rabbits were seen, which Warren Hill is famous for. Passing Worsaw End House, they then fol lowed the footpath through Radbrook, Hookcliffe and Gerna crossing Pendle Road to Clay House, where it was an easy walk into the village of Downham.
■ Passing near Newfield Barn, and walking under the railway, a track brought them back into Chat- burn, the five-mile route was a great way to umvind at the end of-the day.- ---------:---------■
also host private -visits for garden clubs or other local groups, which can be arranged by phoning them on 01254 249694.
O Stephen Powers and Carole
Ann Cronshaw will also open their garden under National Gar den Scheme on Sunday, June 14th. I t is at Casa Lago, 1 Wood lands Park , Whalley. Phone 01254 824903 for more details.
Enough time to stop to admire spring blooms
THE rain was fairly light, with a few short breaks, for the third "stroller" walk of Clitheroe Ram blers, led by Pat Parrott. Starting from Standen
Hall Lane, the group walked down to the A59, which they crossed with care and made their way to the Standen Hey enclave, down the track and over the railway line. The pa th took them through the community woodland, an extensive plantation, where the trees were seen to be gain ing some maturity, down to the base of the old cross. From here they walked the circuit of the BrookHouse conserva tion site, and in a short break from the rain, they had lunch by the foot bridge, in the company of a group of horses who seemed fairly indifferent to their presence. Passing Shuttleworth
Farm they joined the Ribble Way, and followed it as far as Siddows, where the group turned to walk under the railway line,
through Lower Standen Hey and returned via field paths back to the lane and starting point. At this time of year,
when the bluebells are in flower, the slower pace of the stroller walk provides an opportunity to stop and admire the display of spring flowers. The previous week Mrs
P a r ro t t
led.the second stroller walk from East Marton's Cross Keys Hotel along
the.track to Ingethorpe Grange and then towards Stainton Cotes, a large and very
■ lovely set of buildings. After admiring the hall and gardens, the group continued towards Conis- ton Cold, passing through Ingber House Farm and through fields to the Leeds and Liverpool ’ Canal. ■
The strollers continued
along a convoluted course of the canal, on the tow path, until arriving back in East Marton where the canal continued under the double arched bridge on
-past Primrose-Lodge,- - its way-to Barnoldswick.
