: A :have to look forward to now is a . General Election, maybe soon, or maybe
. next year, who knows?, ■ ;; In the local elections the Conservatives came out as top dogs after decades of Labour control. Whether they can do any better for the Kibble iValley, only time will tell. Will we see a greater improvement in our services or will it be more of the same?
■ ’ The local highlight of the county coun cil election count was the battle royal between the Conservatives and the Lib eral Democrats for the Clitheroe Di-vi sion seat. There had to be two recounts after a close poll and, after some confu sion, the Lib-Dems won by a handful of votes. Yet it appears that most Clitheroe folk
are either not interested in politics or they have effectively voted against all the • parties standing by not voting at all. The turnout for Clitheroe Division was just 36%, with the Lib-Dems coming into

power with just over 1,800 votes. That represents a small percentage of the actu al number of voters in the Clitheroe Divi-.-
sion. . - In other words, it could be argued that
the majority of people in the division did not want the Lib-Dems (or any other) in power, but here lies the problem with our present system - how can you register a vote of no confidence in any party within the present system?
- The European elections panned out as
predicted, with the Conservatives win ning hands down. The other main party

that did well was the UK Independence' Party (UKIP), coming into second place above all others. And, whether you lilce ' them or. loathe them, it is now a fact that the BNP has two Members of the Euro-- pean Parliament, one right here repre senting you in the North West- People are now expressing their anger'
and frustration that this far right party has been elected, but with nearly a mil-
- lion voters, one has to ask, are their poli cies the in-thing?
' Over the years there has been acon- : stant cry for the banning of the BNP, but ■ in doing so do we not lay ourselves open for action to ban other parties, and do we then not risk becoming a dictatorship?
: In England we pride ourselves on being a to le ran t country. If we begin the process of banning legitimate political parties, theii the action we took in 1939 would have been a wasted one. As I said, love them or loathe them,

4 Cornet of Thwaites, please • A N enterprising Ribble Valley
. ZA landlord has devised a win- ■ X JLning recipe to beat the credit crunch - beer flavoured ice-cream! David Wardleworth, who is head chef
and landlord a t The Traders Arms in Mellor, insists on Thwaites Original as
• the key ingredient for his new Lancashire delicacy. And the unusual taste has cer tainly got customers flocking to the pub . in droves.
: “It's proving immensely popular,’’ said
Da\dd (35), who came up with the novel idea after the flavour proved a smash hit with regulars during a special tasting ses sion.■
■ ■:■', Although he insists the recipe must
remain a closely guarded secret, he is happy to reveal the key ingredient is Thwaites Original cask ale. “We make all of our own ice-cream at
the pub and regularly experiment with different flavour combinations,” said • David. “On one occasion we decided to -make a batch with cask ale, so we tried the Daniel Thwaites festive ale, Good ■ ‘Elf.: -: '
■ ' . ■
After that went down well with our regulars, we then decided to make anoth-
. er based on Thwaites Original, which is now selling even better.”
•
With pubs continuing to close a t unprecedented levels across the UK,
. 25 years ago ’ REGULARS a t a Clitheroe public
■ house started a desperate last-minute attempt to halt its closure. A petition had already raised 200 signatures and regulars of the Joiners Arms, Whalley Road, had sent a plea in Lancashire dialect prose to the brewery in the hope - of areprieve.' . .
:
,' , • OUT-OF-WORK Second World War veteran Ben Harris decided to channel his frustration into something worthwhile raising funds for the Royal British Legion. The 58-year-old was in the middle of organising a spon sored 550-mile bicycle ride from Glas gow to London. . . .
True equality
“Don’t be a big girl”. We don’t similarly advise a girl against being “a big boy”.
' We refer, in a slightly amused way, to Brownie points, but never to Cub points. Actually, Brownies do not have points. We talk about someone acting-
like an old woman. Why do we
•not equally refer to “an old ■man’.’? Years ago we had • “loose” or “fallen” women, . some of whom were consigned to mental institutions. Men ,who had had their sexual
,, affairs were treated more gen- erously. “Well, it’s what boys do,im’tit?”
■ A recent report indicated that women outperform men ■ in almost every single aspect''
, of higher education. It should make those people turn in
their grav® who, a generation or two ago, thought th a t a- girl’s role was largely to get ' married and have children. Why bother to send her on to university? In my own univer sity days the great majority of students were men; today the balance has swung the o th er' way.
. The Christian faith is cen-'
tred on a Lord who welcomed women
and.children in a way that was radical for his time.: The apostle Paul, when his life was turned around through his encounter "with • Christ, , declared .“there is no male or
female; we are all one in Christ Jesus”. ' Sometimes the Church has
expected obedience from its women, requiring in the mar- ’
riage service that lyives obeyed -
: their husbands. It convenient- ■ ly forgot that “the good wife” in the book of Proverbs in the. . Old Testament, offered a pic ture of womanhood that was anything but submissive o r.
.'unintelligent. :• • ■
r. She bought and sold land, and was clearly a strong per-
: sonality,in her home and com-. munity.
' .
w' Christianity is a religion of freedom, in which everyone
. can find their true selves and : know that'Christ has broken down divisions which humans
have created. ■ " - CANON RODNEl

classroom. - Eighty years ago the school had two
classrooms - one for infants and one for juniors (the junior classroom was the cur rent school hall) -which is a big change from the seven classrooms today.
,
Mr Oddie also talked about his memo ries of his family taking in an evacuee boy ■ during the war. Pupils in Class 4 were
-especially interested in this because they- • have just finished a history topic on the Second World War.
■ • ' - • Headteadcher Sarah Tuley commented: ■

landlord at The Traders for two years, believes his signature dessert is helping The Traders Arms to get a name for its food.
' , ' ■ “It’s becoming more and more difficult
to make a living in the pub trade these days, mainly because of the amount of tax on beer, so landlords like me have to try other things to pull the customers in,” said David.
Alan returns to former school
■ “Pro'viding good food is obviously one way of doing that, and our unique selling point at The Traders is our homemade ice-cream. “ In fact, some of our regulars like it so
much, they have started asking-me to make special batches for them, which they can take away to have a t home.” • Our picture shows David Wardle
