Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 01282 426161 (Advertising), Burnley 01282 422331 (Classified) 14 Clitherbe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, May 14th, 2009 MP says thanks

for compassion THE days and weeks since my moth er’s sudden passing have been incredi bly difficult for me.. I have never known such raw grief

and profound loss. I have been touched by the many

letters, cards and messages, which you have sent to me since the news broke. I cannot begin to tell you how much comfort I have taken from them. I know many of you have suffered

losses in your lives and therefore- many of your messages have been heartfelt and incredibly touching. . The days pass, but my.memory of

her never will. Her kindness and spir it permeates me every day. Thank you for your compassion

and understanding - it really helps. NIGEL EVANS

, Ribhlc Valley MP Insult is beyond

the pale... THERE is no white elephant in Hurst Green, but there is certainly a

duck-egg! ' Nobody is forcing Mr Frank Nut

ter, or indeed any other Hurst Green resident, to contribute money towards the upkeep of the village hall. To insult, by snide criticism, the self less fund-raising efforts of the village hall committee-a genuinely dedicat ed, community-spirited group of peo-’ pie who give up many hours to clean ing and maintaining the hall on a vol untary basis - is beyond the pale. Mr Nutter was wrong to suggest

that the hall is only used by the com mittee - it is used for many things and is a real asset to the local commu nity. I would agree that this magnifi cent venue is under-used and if more

bookings were taken then the income could cover the runnig costs. This fantastic building has toilets,

a kitchen, bar, stage and sprung dance floor. It is ideal for dances, par ties, stage productions, gigs, presenta tions or indeed any other social gath ering and offers real value for money: in these financially challenging times. People of the Ribble Valley, please consider booking this wonderful venue (ring Kath on 01254 826898).. ■ A fund-raising scheme was intro- ■ duced not so long ago whereby people could donate £10 to become a “Friend of the ABC Memorial Hall”. I would suggest that Mr Nutter puts down his poison pen and digs deep into his wallet to become one. After his letter last week it may be the only ^ friend he has left in Hurst Green!: . . MICK O’REILLY, '

■ I THINK it a terrible shame that ^ Mr Frank Nutter does not seem to consider the beating heart of the local community to be a worthy cause. Whilst I respect Mr Nutter’s right to his rather unorthodox views regarding the Hurst Green Village Hall, of which I have long been aware, I consider this attempt to publicly undermine and humiliate the village hall committee, to be rep rehensible. From having attended many WI

meetings in the hall, I know that the back kitchen is both well used and in need of an upgrade. To insinuate that

the committee is trying to raise money for an unnecessary and waste- ■

ful project is both untrue and unhelp- _ ful. Furthermore as Mr Nutter is not • a financial contributor (by his own public admission) to the upkeep of the hall,'is it appropriate for him to criticise expenditure? ■:

without its problems, but with the steady hand of this intelligent and dedicated committee a t the tiller, coupled with the support of the vast majority of the local community,'! am sure that these will be overcome. Incidentally, I would be somewhat

Critical time MAY I remind dog owners that this is a critical time for all ground nesting birds. Dogs running free, even if they do not come into physical contact with birds, are likely to flush parents from the nest, leading to potential loss of eggs or young. Ground nesting birds favour areas such as river and

■ THE Memorial Hall committee, . Hurst Green, thankMr Nutter for-; giving the hall some publicity and we acknowledge his right to his opinion. As he has not visited the hall for a

number of years, he may not realise - that some of his facts are incorrect. The hall is well used by both commu nity (including the Football Club, Bowling Club, Toddler Group, Youth Club, dancing classes, WI, The Vil lage Fete, weddings, plays, concerts, private parties) and also commercial groups. ■ Unfortunately, due to the present high cost of utilities, it is an expensive building to run and maintain. Currently, even with the help of

volunteers and local tradesmen who give their time for free, it is impossi ble to meet running costs from book ing fees. If the hall is in disrepair, people will

go elsewhere for their functions and the local community will lose their venue, so fund-raising has to be an ongoing project. If Mr Nutter would like to keep in

I would request all dog owners to

keep their pets under close cpntrol in such places. A dog under close control walks to heel, stops immediately when told and returns immediately., when called.

MP has jumped on

latest bandwagon ONCE again Mr Evans, our local MP, has jumped on the latest band wagon - this time hanging onto the coattails of a glamorous TV star - when he claims that he is ashamed that all Gurkhas who have fought for this country are not allowed to settle here. As usual, he only tells half the story. No doubt he \vill be even more ashamed of the conduct of his own party, who, during 18 years in office, did not allow a single Gurkha to settle here. ■' - ‘ ■ . ‘ I t was only when the Labour Party

came into office in 1997 that Gurkhas who served in the British Army after that date were allowed to stay here wth their families; The present con troversy is whether or not Gurkhas who served prior to 1997, and their dependents, should be allowed in. However, it is more complicated that th a t . .

'V Mr Evans says th a t he believes

that, and I quote: “Anybody who has served in our Armed Forces and has fought for this country deserves our respect, loyalty and, most of all, they deserve to live here if they choose to

do so.” Does he also include the many hundreds of thousands of ex-service men from mainly ex^olonial coun- tries in’this'statement? If so, he is in direct conflict with the policy of his own party and if not, then he is being discriminatory. . Once again'Mr Evans shows how

Supporting a very worthwhile charity

. ON Tuesday, March 31st, about 30 members of Barbers Bandits Line dancers gathered at St Paul's Parish Hall, in Low Moor, Clitheroe to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care Appeal. During the month of March many

line dancers take part in events for Marie Curie usually supporting a dance especially choreographed for thepurposa r - In an attempt to do something dif

ferent and encourage greater support, I decided to put together 26 dances the names of which represented each letter of the alphabet and we would dance them non-stop.

: All the dances are well known favourites, both old and new, using, where possible, the choreographer's original choice of music. Members were given the opportu

nity to donate or obtain sponsorship mth an even split of 50/50. One par ticular donation of note was a bottle full of pennies that had to be counted by me. Carrying all the money proved a heavy task! , We took about one hour and 45

minutes to complete all the dances, everybody took part although some only managed a few steps for the ones they didn't know. Exhausted by the end, we were glad of the refreshments provided afterwards and a chance to rest our weary legs. ■ All the comments afterwards were

good with many people saying how much fun they had in taking part.

. On Tuesday, April 28th, Lyn Fen ton from Marie Curie Cancer Care joined us at St Paul’s. Maureen Wat son, a valued member of our dancers and whose late husband recently received care from the Marie Curie nurses, thanked Marie Curie for their very important work and handed over the money. The best part of this is that we

managed to raise a total of £1,060, all of which has been given to the Marie Curie Cancer Care Fund. A fantastic effort by all those tak

ing part, supporting a very worth while charity. A big thank you to all those supporting the event. JOHN BARBER, 43 GunicU Road, Clilhcroc
