. SCRUM DOWN: Action from thecnd-of-scason game

Curtain comes down on rugby season

THE elub house at Littlemoor was the location for Clitheroe RUFC’s 31st annual dinner. A full room of guests, made up of

local dignitaries, ardent club sup porters, current and former players enjoyed a meal and witnessed the annual prize presentation. ■ President Colin Silcock’s intro

duction was followed by second XV captain Simon Rawstron’s enter taining synopsis of the season, where he named Danny Cowgill as the seconds’ player of the season' and Richard Murray as the most'- improved player. Outgoing first XV captain Ben'

Graves awarded the player of the season honour to Paul Callaghan, and most improved player was Greg Birch. The following day saw the annu-. al president’s match, with the first team taking on a side made up of second teamers, former players and theoddringer.

' .

This year was no exception with the president and his captain.

Simon Rawstron, drawing on a wealth of talent and experience. The firsts kicked-off and got

stuck in right from the start. Only some crafty forward play

and stout defence kept the firsts at bay, however, they continued to dominate territory for the open parts of the game.

•, Flashes'of brilliance from star

winger Kieron Keough and centre Paul Callaghan ensured that the president’s men were continually on the back foot, and eventually the pressure took its toll, with the ball dotted down a few times for excellently-worked tries. That said, veteran Alan Nuttall

combined well with the upcoming second row Danny Cowgill, and together with the sturdy front row of Rawstron, Holmes and Procter, they ensured a tight battle at close quarters and continually disrupted the firsts’ game plan of moving the ball wide at every chance. - As the rain subsided, the firsts began to stretch their lead, but not

before the president’s side scored themselves. Among the scorers were Keough

(2), Callaghan (3), O’Conner (1) and- full back and kicker Lafraricschina, who once again was named man-of-the-match on behalf of the president. After the match, Oliver McEn-

tyre was named new first team captain, taking over from Graves, who steps do\vn after three years. lain Harris has announced his

intention to continue coaching at Clitheroe RUFC for the near future, and the club will aim to make the most of his sustained efforts to develop rugby in Clitheroe by getting people down to training throughout the summer and pre-season, so that come August the Maroon and Golds hit the ground running. Check the website out for details

of training and upcoming events, or call Bob Wilkinson (07962 099935).

Wray and Mytton Fold’s Phil Ryan have won their club’s qualifying rounds for the English Golf Union’s Gold Medal event. And they are now hop

• Runner up Matt Walsh finished just one shot behind with a 89-17-72, beating club president David Hargreaves (90-17- 73) into third place. Division One winner

was Dave Bolton (85-12- 73) with Mike Kelby tak ing Division Two with a score of 91-17-74. Barbara Thornton and

Tracy Bentley won th e ’ Fourball Betterball Stable- ford and Ping Qualifier at Clitheroe GC on Thurs day. The pair scored 40

points to win by five from Maureen Micklewright and Elizabeth Narayana, who vvere runners-up by a point from Helen Cook and Kris Baldwin. Joining Thornton and

Bentley as Ping qualifiers were Pat Murray and Pat Brennan mth 27 points. In Thursday’s Long-

worth Cup second qualify ing competition at Whal ley, Joyce Andrew took first place with a score of 93-19-74. Second was Bridget

Rees (102-26-76) and, after a three-way card play-off, Ann Pollard (98- 21-77) took third place. On Sunday the ladies

played in a BWGA Medal competition. Kim Andrew won with a

score of 73+1-74. Carrie James (97-23-74) took sec ond place and Vivien Birtwell (98-22-76) fin ished third. The Mytton Fold ladies
