ATRADITIONAL art'is being revived in the Ribble Valley.
; Former lecturer and dyslex ia consultant Rohana Stod- dart (pictured) has launched a range of workshops to teach the art of hook-binding using contemporary and recycled materials.
. ; Having set up her own cre
ative arts business a t Back ridge Farm, in Twitter Lane,. called Rohana Designs, she . now wants to give local people a grounding in creating hand- stitched page sections and making covers from a range o f : materials. Rohana said: “I ’m a great
believer in keeping traditional crafts such as book-binding alive. Most of the books that we buy are mass produced using machinery and glue, and whilst I know the traditional method of b in d in g books could never make a return on a grand scale, creating your . own diaries, notebooks or memory books for your friends and family can be extremely
; rewarding and they become real treasures and keepsakes.”
• The classes will give stu- ' ; dents a thorough grounding in .• creating handstiched page sec- ’ tions, through to the making- 'of covers which could include the use of metals, recycled materials, silks and felts. Rohana added: “I t is a fas
cinating process, one which I learned over 20 years ago and love teaching to all age groups. I t is a real journey and stu dents are able to explore their; creativ ity and personalise^ their books using whatever; they can, one even used the mechanism of a broken watch for their diary which was truly inspiring!” She also runs fine silver
workshops using a clay-type material which hallmarks to
'.999 giving even novices the ability to make and finish i ready-to-wear jewellery pieces,.; or use i t within th e ir book cover designs. , For further information con
tact Rohana on 0785 5443120 or ■visit her workshop.
