doors open to us LAST weekend,\as.you may be aware, my re-enactment society,

" Historia Nonnannis, did a show in the castle grounds.

^ The Friday night before the events '

the wind was howling and the rain, •, as if on cite; was hammering down. -- In the morning, needless to say, s some of us were the worse for wear,-. and we began to light our. fires, and try to dry off as much as we cduld. ?;-: ■ r was grabbed hy-one of my -,

group officers early in the morning * to be told our group had been - approached by a lady from the ter race of housing immediately behind us, and I was half-way to phrasing - an apology for disturbing her in my head when my. thoughts were inter rupted by the officer concemedi - ^ I t seemed that this lady, seeing'us .■

struggling in the wet and the cold,- had decided to offer us the use of her house. Furthermore, she was offering us hot tea, food, and com^ fort, and was fully prepared to let all 40-odd young men and women- ' tramp into her house. . ^ .

by her generosity. Thvo of my mem- ' bers were ill, and they made their way to her house and were treated like family. Furthermore, she apolo gised to them that she had to “pop out” at nine o'clock; leaving these ; two cold and sodden strangers in her living room! . • : ' Needless to say, as medieval re

enactors, and.students, my mem bers can look a little rough around the edges. In fact, some of us look like

rejects from a Hell's Angels conven tion, and th a t ’s before we'don. armour and hit each other with - swords! But this lady, as far as I could see, living on her own, rather

V than being worried by our presence, just over her wall, threw her, door open to us and made us feel truly • welcome. , So to Mrs Edith Child, the mem- ■
