- M A JO R S ; Clitheroe’s NHS Treatment
■ R o om s was well and tru ly “wrapped up” with the cut- ^
ting of a ceremonial bandage! NHS East Lancashire’s chair-
man Kathy Reade appropriately, cut a bandage instead of a ribbon to officially declare the centre open to patients..
-
Mrs Reade said she was - ^delighted that the £650,000 .
•^revamp and improvement work had finished off the initial £1.4m.
; investment in Clitheroe Health . Centre to bring the facilities there - right into the 21st Century.
jv;; is a really worthwhile and
important investment when you consider that 40,000 treatments; are done here for Ribble Valley residents each year,’’ said Mrs Reade.
V “ It’s all part of our efforts to • have these facilities on hand, in ; the community and closer to peo ple’s homes.” . . Health Centre Manager Sheila
: Millard said that the enhanced facilities were to be welcomed and .would be much appreciated by
patients and staff alike.' Treat ment Room Sister Jane Spurgeon added that the important issue of patient confidentiality could now be addressed in a much more sat isfactory way thanks to the improved layout. ’I'he event was also attended by
NHS East Lancashire’s Director of Nursing and Service Provision Val Carman, who has responsibil ity for the staff who work at the Treatment Room. She thanked her staff, who were “ centre stage” at the official
; opening,'along with retired nurs es Patricia Hornby, Theresa Tom linson and Susan Jackson, and retired health care assistant Lynn Bootle. ■ Patients’ representatives Tony Gill and Robert Smith were also invited to attend the opening
• . event.-:; .: Our picture shows Mrs Reade , cutting the bandage to declare the new and improved facilities at Clitheroe Health Centre well and truly open, while staff and guests look on.

T-WO charity cyclists who left Land’s End in nothing but . their underpants and shoes are due to arrive in Slaidbum tomorrow. . Friends Adam Dunn and
Gavin Topley, both in their - early 20s, are taking on the challenge of their life to raise money for international devel opment charity ActionAid.'
. They set out on Saturday : with the very bare essentials - . wearing just their underpants and shoes and carrying no ' cash, food or other clothes - on the long ride to John.O’ Groats.
...........
'. Mirroring their own bid to help others in need, they are relying on the kindness of complete strangers to clothe, feed and shelter them. '. ;. Hopefully, by the time they ■. arrive for a night’s stopover in Slaidburn tomorrow, they will have something more suitable to wear and have had a good
meal or two, but they will still be hoping to find local people willing to show their generosi ty and help out or sponsor them. Gavin said: “ I ’d volun-
teered for ActionAid’a anti- povery campaign at last year’s Reading festival. “ I knew the charity worked
to make a real difference to some of the poorest people in thewbrld. . . “Although we can only
imagine what it must be like to live in the extreme condi tions that people face every day around the world, we wanted to incorporate a little bit of that into the challenge- which is why we decided not to take any food, money or
clothing.”, . . Hoping to raise £3,000 for
ActionAid, the challenge will, take ; Gavin and Adam through many areas of the UK. In addition to a stopover in Slaidburn, they

‘Up before the beak’ at Probus Club
MAGISTRATES Mr Ian Ainsworth and Mrs Jan Allcock were welcomed as guest
• speakers at Clitheroe and District Probus Club.
• Mr Ainsworth started his working life in 1960 at the District Bank in Great Har
wood and after about 30 years joined Age Concern as a Promotions Officer for the next 11 years. He retired in 2007, but; became a magistrate in 1994 dealing with the adult criminal side of the cases. ' ; Justice of the Peace (JP) is the official
description of a magistrate and the speak er explained just how' long a history is associated with this position. Back in 1195, knights were designated “Keepers of. the Peace” , then in 1361 the term “Justice of the Peace’’ was coined. Ladies were
■ admitted to the bench in the early 1900s and there are now 26,000 JPs in England and Wales. He and Mrs Allcock serve in the Dar-
wen, Blackburn and Ribhle -Valley area, sitting in the courts in Northgate, Black- bum. Magistrates can sit singly to take a case, or in a group of three. Nationally they, try around 2.5 million cases annually and can serve between the ages of 18 and 70. -With'this background, the audience expressed considerable interest in accounts of cases described by both speakers - with due regard to anonymity. Question time was regrettably short and the meeting was brought to a close by member John Hem ingway, who propose the vote of thanks. Clitheroe and District Probus Club
meets on the first and third Fridays of the month at 10-45 a.m. in the Pendle Club, Lowergate, Clitheroe.
