terms of the average age of its musicians it is con sidered to be the youngest in the world. The orchestra belongs

to the “Recreio Musical Uniao da Mocidade”, an association whose pri mary objectives are music, theatre and other cultural activities, partic ularly for young people. The younger members

of the orchestra attend music practice every day, the youngest member currently playing in their weekly concerts is just

seven years old, and he will be on the tour. But he won’t be the youngest for long -

there are another four seven-year-olds in the pipeline! The musical director,

Eurico Martins, says that belonging to the orchestra teaches the children discipline, self- confidence and maturity. He also explains that

many of his past s tu dents have gone on to university having paid their fees from money raised through the per formances which the orchestra undertakes. This, he said, was

important because it helped those from poorer backgrounds to gain financial independence

from their parents, allowed them to purchase school books, study and pursue their goals. The orchestra has so

far produced five CDs and two DVDs, with a third due out soon. Its concert a t The Grand will be a mix of the orchestra playing Tight classics’ and accompany ing Carlos in his selection of Neapolitan songs. It is anticipated that if

this tour is as successful as the la s t one, the orchestra will return, maybe next year.. . ; ■ With tha t in mind
