New boss required

THE East Lancs League football champions Rim- ington FC are looking for a reserve team manager. The position would

suit somebody who has experience in this league and has th e a b il ity to work with younger play ers and helping them develop into first-team members. Anyone ' interested

should contac t either Martin: : Lawson :, on 444697 or Terry Braith- waite on 428190. . : •' Players are reminded

that training is now on Mondays at Roefield and Rimington on , Th u rs days, s ta r tin g a t 6-30 p.m.

SKIPPER: Oliver McEnfyre

,. As with last season,.training will continue on both Tuesdays and' Thursdays, but the major change is th a t .Thursday becomes the main team training night, where attendance is mandatory, while Tuesdays will be for general fitness and contact work. . At the end of last season, Clitheroe

made the decision to move the first team' out of the RFU leagues and into the Miller Homes League (3N) where they have been pitched against teams from Vale of Lune, Bolton, Fylde and Kirkby Lonsdale.

'I So now, both first and second

teams play in the Miller Homes League, and an exciting season is in prospect. . The hope is that with the change

in opponents, and with an opportu nity to compete in a much larger league of 14 teams, Clitheroe’s first team will flourish, as has the second XV in recent years. • With this in mind, much effort

has gone into preparing for the forthcoming season, with new firsts captain Oliver McEntyre working hard together with the seconds cap tain Simon Rawstron and club coach Iain Harris to develop a chal lenging and full schedule of train ing, mixed with fun events.

•Another major change is that the

club have set up a senior colts side for the first time in some years. Following interest from a number

of students from CRGS, as well as a continuing desire to play from some of la s t y e a r’s Under 16s group, community rugby coach Martin Powell pushed the idea of growing rugby in this age group to the point where the club have now entered in the North West Senior Colts League where they will be playing teams from Orrell, Vale of Lune and Ashton-under-Lyne. The colts will be training along

side the senior players to enable them to gain as much as possible in their quest to progress.

New players are always welcome

at the club, and for more details, visit www.clitheroerugby.com or call Bob Wilkinson (07962 099935).

Clitheroe ride their luck

THEY may have left it late, but Clitheroe secured a place in the final of the Ramsbot- tom Cup in spectacular and dramatic style. After being beaten by Padiham the pre

vious week the -visitors sought revenge - and they did just that in a game that went right down to the wire. After the hosts had set a target of 156,

the Ribble Valley side needed one run with just one ball remaining to seal their place in the final of the competition. And they got it - just. Daniel Turner was

the hero of the hour as his flick only just evaded the diving palms of Padiham pro fessional Kashif Siddique who came within inches of securing an impressive catch. And that was the margin between victory and defeat - a matter of inches. The two sides had ended the game on the

same amount of runs but it was Clitheroe who won by virtue having conceded one wicket less. The visitors started well in the bowling stakes and made a significant' breakthrough when Padiham’s usually trusty opening partnership of Siddique and Abdul Siddique (0) was broken up. Ben Dowling was the man that punished

the hosts and then things soon got worse for Padiham when Siddique (14) was forced from the crease thanks to a bowl and catch combination from Joshua Marquet and Neil Bolton respectively. The home side were looking nervy, but a

56-run partnership between Umar Sad- dique (32) and John Bushell (38) changed the face of the game as they stood at 84-3. However, those efforts were soon thwarted as wickets started to fall with ease. ■ Lee Anderson (1) was caught by Peter Dibb from a Jack Dewhurst delivery before Farook Butt made Naveed Ashraf (12) his second victim of the afternoon while

Anthony Hall (5) was punished by Dowl- ■ ing. Steve Meehan (11) was next as he became Jack Dewhurst’s fourth and final victim of the innings before Kamaran Farooq (18) was sent packing and the hosts wereallout. In response, Clitheroe rode their luck but

managed to grab victory from the jaws of defeat with the last throw of the dice. The opening partnership of professional Paul Turner (26) and Farook Butt (1) were bowled out relatively early on and Jack Dewhurst was not far behind after being removed for a duck. Peter Dibb put on 30 when partnering

Dewhurst, Josh McDowell (5) and Matthew Coulter (0) along the way and it could and maybe should have been game over at that point with the'visitors on 79-6. But a strong back end pulled Clitheroe

through thanks to 32 from Neil Bolton, 13 from Paul Caskell, 16 from Ben Dowling and an unbeaten 20 from Daniel Turner. Not even two wickets apiece for Farooq, Saddique, Siddiquo and Ashraf could guide

^ their side to -victory. Clitheroe were jubilant but it was a cruel, cruel blow for Padiham. . Clitheroe will now hope for a repeat per formance, maybe ivithout the last minute drama, when they play host to Settle on Saturday. 'Wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m. • Professional Brent Findlay certain

ly wasn’t going to ‘Settle’ for anything less than a convincing victory as he anni hilated a disappointing Clitheroe side at the weekend.

■ The all-rounder was relentless in hand

ing out the punishment to his opposition throughout the afternoon as he thwarted the batsmen in a six-wicket bowling blitz before snatching an unbeaten 50.

Fitzhenry’s heroics in vain

A STRONG brotherly partnership proved to be the decisive factor as Whalley crashed a t the hands of Padiham. Declan Fitzhenry did his best to

put a dent in proceedings as he ; scooped a staggering six-wicket haul, but not even that could spare his side from a 26-run defeat. Professional Kashif Siddique was

not given the most pleasant of wel comes when he was bowled out for a- ’ golden duck which could have rocked

'the home side. Fortunately it didn’t and what fol

lowed was a fantastic 121-run part nership between brothers Abdul (43) and Umar Saddique (62). . - . . : ■

They were both eventually pun-.

ished by Fitzhenry who once again stunner! the home side by taking th e . wickets of Naveed Ashraf (1), John Bushell (0) and Lee Anderson (4) as Padiham were 135-6. But in stepped Kamaran Farooq who stood his ground and refused to:

■ CHATBURN fell to defeat at Barrowford, as John Ormerod claimed a super seven-wicket haul. Barrowford batted first and made

234-6 from their allocated 45 overs.' . ‘ In response, the away side were all

out for 161, despite fine knocks from Steve Bowker (26), Ashley.Bennett. (26) and Rod Booth (32). .

leave the crease as he hit a stubborn half century to really lift the hosts and send them on their way to victo

ry. -Anthony Hall (2), Steve Meehan

(15) and (jadeer Ahmed (8) sent the hosts to 216 at the end of the innings. , And despite a positive 47-run

opening partnership from Whalley pair Martin Davies and bowling star Fitzhenry, the away side crumbled and failed to put up a fight when chasing a revised target of 173. ■ ; 'Vinit indulkar (11),'Mark Fallon

-

(20), Lee Kearsley (14) and Gregory Jones (18) all made worthy contribu tions, but it wasn’t enough. ■ :

: Professional Siddique took four ■wickets while Qadeer Ahmed added another three. The away side finished the innings on 147.

■; Whalley will now look for revenge in the Veka Ribblesdale Cricket League when the two sides meet up again on Saturday at Station Roarl, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

. Meanwhile,- Chatburn seconds

continued their recent winning streak with an excellent 41-run -vic tory over Cullingworth. : There were useful contributions from Mark Nuremburg (14) and Tony Helm (12). In reply, Culling worth had no answer to Ben Threlfall’s excellent 7-19 figures.; .

-41

READ fell just six runs short of their tar get after rain halted play at Cherry Tree’s Preston Old Road ground in the Veka Rib-. blesdale Cricket League. The inclement weather conditions

reduced the away side’s batting innings by 18 overs after they won the toss and decid ed to field first. ‘ ,

’ Cherry Tree opened well as Scott Friend stood his ground at the crease. He batted well on his way to a halt century before being caught by Read professional Harvey from a Warren Eastham delivery for 52. His opening partner Joe Bolton (14)

. I

also struck double figures, but his innings, was brought to a premature close when he

was caught by Eastham from Andrew Rushton’s ball.

; ■ "

. But professional Broom then came to .

the fore as Read’s chances of victory were scuppered by the day’s first storm courtesy of the pro’s batting prowess.. The skies darkened over the heads of

Read’s outfield as Broom hit balls all over the park, hitting a downpour of bound-

; aries along the way. The batsman was like lightning as he hit 88 before Harvey made the vital breakthrough. , ■ : ...... ; Mark Hadfield (28) and Stephen

Elwood (32 not out) also posted good scores for the home side as they finished the innings on 226-4. .

i

■ - However, Read then fell victim to a sec- ond storm; only this time it was the weather that affected play. - The rain hurtled down and caused 18 overs worth of damage, meaning Read’s target was reduced to 159. Nick Marsh failed to make a positive

mark on proceedings as he was caught by. Scott Friend, the first of five catches, from a Waqas Hussain delivery. ‘ Andrew Laycock managed double fig

ures as he struck 18 before Joe Marshall made a swift 23..

' Professional Harvey (45) then took the . game to Cherry Tree and gave the tie an . exciting close as he fell agonisingly close of

a half-century, and Jack Jones made the target look even more manageable after finishing up on 37. Eastham (15) also made double figures,

but low scores from Peter Howarth (2), and end of innings singles from Rushton (1 not out) and Gareth Halley (3 not out) proved costly as Read missed out on vic tory by six runs.

. Read were rewarded with five points for

their efforts. ’ However, they will be given their chance to take revenge on their opponents when the two sides meet again on Saturday at 'Whalley Road, wickets pitched a t 1-30 p.m. ■
