Q: I think my children suspect tha t Father
Christmas isn't real. Should I tell them the truth? A: Agony aunt Suzie Dayman of
www.agony-
aunt.com says: "If you suspect your children don't believe in Father Christmas anymore, you can almost guarantee it. Children tend to twig years before parents come to terms with it, because mums and dads like thinking of their kids as young and innocent. "If you teU the truth, it doesn't take the magic out
of Christmas, in fact I believe the reverse. If you believe in Father Christmas and don't get the pres ent you want, that means you're a bad child accord ing to the myth. It also means you don't recognise the value of the thing you've been given. "Really, the myth fosters an inability to recognise
somebody had to work hard to get these presents." CAN YOU REALLY RE-GIFT?
Q: I got two of the same top for my birthday in
November. Can I re-gift one of them to give to some one else? A: John Lewis stationery buyer Jenny Spiver says: "Sometimes - but do so with caution. My suggestion
would be to fol low these guidelines: f irs t and foremost, only give something you think the recipient would like to have. The item must be brand new and in its original package, and the person who gave you the gift and the new recipient shouldn't be able to ’ catch on that you've re-gifted. "Discretion is a must! If there's any chance ’
the friend who gave the gift could discover you've' passed it along, don't do it. "It's never a. good idea to re-gift a one-of-a-kind
present, especially if it was made for you." HOW CAN WE KEEP UP? Q: My brother and his wife are really wealthy
-we're a bit strapped for cash this year and can't real ly afford to buy them all presents. I don't want them to look down on us though. A; Lucy Beresford, psychotherapist and expert on
the psychology of Christmas presents, says: "There seems to be a fear the presents have got to be exactly comparable - the same price or the same degree of lavishness as the gifts you get. "Unfortunately a lot of people believe that, but it
isn't how present giving ought to be. The price of the gift often gets in the way of aU the other elements. I t shouldn't be about the money- think of things th a t are more appropriate. These people may have loads of cash, but they may be lacking in time, so volunteer to baby-sit or something.

problem is that as soon as you walk into your par en ts ' house, you may be 40 years old and a professor, you go straight back to being a little boy or g ir l. That may mean you don't see the adults playing m a n i p u l a t i v e games within your family. If your wife is being made to feel small and unwelcome, that's a game you need to wake up and see.
