We need to fight to keep our hospital!

I, ALONG with many others, attended the public meetings held throughout the Ribble 'Valley regarding the new Clitheroe Hos pital. At these meetings we were assured that funding for the new hospital was in place. I then went on to become a

member of the Public Engage ment Group and we were once again assured that funds were in place and that the development did not depend on the sale of the present hospital. So where has the money gone,

has it been diverted to fund new schemes elsewhere in East Lan cashire? At one time the hospital had

three wards with around 80 patients. The new hospital was to have 32 beds, as 30 beds were at present in use. In last week's paper i t was

reported that 22 beds were now in use. I do not believe that this is due to shortage of staff. Are they gradually trying to phase out the hospital? They will next say it's not viable or fit for pmpose. Clitheroe Hospital is excellent

for rehabilitation, with Ribble Valley doctors able to attend their patients, and also with its clinics, X-ray, day care, out of hours service, along with other facilities. I t is essential to have a hospital in Clitheroe. Ribble Val ley and its many rural villages need and depend on the continua tion of the hospital. Living in Slaidburn, I know

what it is like to travel to the Royal Blackburn Hospital every day for six weeks with the fuel and car parking charges. East Lancashire Health

Authority needs to think long and hard and realise the need for the hospital in Clitheroe. With the rising fuel and transport costs and the long mileage from the vil lages, it ought to consider climate change and the carbon footprint. As chairman of the Friends of

Slaidburn Country Practice and a former RVBC councillor for the Bowland area, I feel we are going to have to fight to keep our health services local or once again it will be deprivation of the nual areas. DOROTHY PEARSON Slaidburn

Where have all

our taxes gone? TO be called "gloomy" for having the temerity to be critical of some parts of the public and private sector was wrong. I am "inquisitive," yes.

"Gloomy", no. "Exploited" yes, yes, yes - together with millions of my brothers and sisters. I am afraid my critic is out of touch with the real United King

dom where we have bloated wages for council leaders and NHS man agers. Where Government debt has nearly trebled under Labour and £60 billion is owed to Private Finance Initiative developers in the NHS alone. How many more billions of our taxes do Govern ment owe for PFI investments in other public services? Mr Brown - what the heU have

you done with all our taxes? They have not all gone on MPs expens es surely. We have record personal debt

with 80 businesses going "bust" every day, while pawn shops, gold buyers, claims lawyers and chari ty shops are aU doing fine. The rich getting richer and the

poor getting poorer while many good, honest people are losing their homes and jobs. I t was reported on TV tonight, one job, in a large supermarket brought 250 applications - and experts predict there is worst to come. Yet immigrants keep "rolling" in. We have had political smears

and spin, bare-faced lies and false promises, not forgetting political ly correct Orwellain Big Broth- erism. I could go on and on - suffice

for me to tell my critic just some of the jobs I have done in the "University of L ife " , the best education one can get. I have been a book dealer, coalman, meat "bumper", electrician, a Smithfield fruit and veg porter, cablemaker, scrap metal worker, a ropemaker and I was never "sacked" from any of them. I've also served in the Army

and the Merchant Navy. ■What's in your CV Tessa Gar

rard (CAT Letters, October 22nd)? BERT HARDWICK Queensway, Waddington

Your chance to

"LEST we forget" was the head line in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times last week (October 22nd) and then we were given dates and venues when our dead soldiers would be remembered locally and nationally on the 8th and 11th days of November respectively. Here then is another date for

of the Girls’ Club and we invite past members of aU other church youth groups to join us particu larly those who had met Betty as a result of our combined activi ties. Although she greatly enjoyed

her new life with her family in Australia, Betty never forgot her youth club days in Clitheroe nor her many friends she had made through table tennis and netball. So please join us at the Mass on

November 19th. I t will be an opportunity to renew old acquaintances. MARY LEIGH-MILLER Clitheroe

Help our animals

through winter SADLY our financial situation is becoming a critical concern; we are struggling to survive in the current economic climate, and with winter approaching our efforts will be stretched to the limit. To cover the cost of straw, feed,

haylage and vet bills we need to raise £4,500 per week and have no option but to appeal to your won derful readers for help. Ways to help: make a donation

or standing order from a £1 per week; donate quality items of clothing, books and shoes or adopt one of our animals for £15 a year, which makes a novel Christmas present while helping a good cause. We understand these are diffi

cult times for everyone and any help at all will be so gratefully received. EVrther details from the sane- -

A BIG thank you from all the animals at Altham Animal Cen tre. Thanks to the generosity of

your diary of remembrances. On Thursday the 19th day of

the 11th month also at 10 a.m. at St Michael and St John's RC Church there will be a Requiem Mass for Bet ty Penny, a past member of the Catholic Girls' Club, who died in Australia on September 22nd. At this same Mass we will also remember all deceased members

shoppers at Booths supermarket in Clitheroe on October 9th and 10th, the fantast ic to ta l of £596.78 was raised. This money will be used locally for the welfare of local animals. Collections like this help great

ly. As a local independent and self-funding branch of the RSPCA we would not survive without support from local peo ple. KEN HARRISON, Branch Manager, . RSPCA Lancs East
