Clitheroe RVFC .... .14 Pendle..............40 A BLEND of youth and experience was called on to boost a depleted scjuad against Pendle at Littlemoor. Clitheroe kicked off, but Pendle

came charging down the pitch through their forwards and scored two quick tries within the first five minutes. Slowly, the locals started to play their way back, with good pressure in the Pendle half, but Pendle turned over and ran in a further try which was unconverted. Further pressure towards the

Pendle line should have seen Clitheroe notch some points, but Pendle were wily at the break down, and despite giving away several penalties they managed to

Ciitheroe Advertiser & T im e s , Thursday, November 5th, 2009 45 bloods give Pendle a go Rugby union

keep their line unbreached and added another score before half time and a t the turnaround Clitheroe trailed 26-0. Pendle again came out firing

with two quick tries, both converted to move the score on to 40-0. But for the last 30 minutes It

was all Clitheroe apart from the odd flash of an attack from Pendle. Pendle have one of the best

defences in the league and have been notoriously mean in gifting points away, therefore it was to the credit of the Maroon and Golds they kept pestering the Pendle line. From a penalty, prop Graves

barrelled over near the posts to give Clitheroe their first points.

Another young blood Joe

Basquill scored the next try with a searing run, with the extras earn ing a more respectable scoreline. There were good displays from

those that stepped into the breach while other squad members were unavailable, and a full turnout at training will make selection very hard for the Maroon and Golds’ next match at Vale of Lune 3rds. Rossendale 3 r d s ........17 Clitheroe 2 n d s ..........IS

CLITHEROE were thwarted by the width of the crossbar in an entertaining game at Marl Pits. Two tries apiece and 10-all at

the break, it was so near but not far enough for the Littlemoor outfit. Clitheroe found themselves under the cosh for most of the first

quarter as Dale used a hefty pack to good effect, and after a prolonged series of drives they rolled and rumbled the ball over for the opening score. Clitheroe began to come out of

their shells, and as Dale conceded penalties left, right and centre, eventually Clitheroe got within range and Fitzhemy obliged for the three points. Not to be outdone. Dale came

back strongly for one of their own. Still smarting, Clitheroe replied

right from the restart. After Dale fumbled, No.8 Billy Thatcher was on the hall and swarming forward. Up popped Clitheroe’s man of

the match Mark Piercey in support, and from 20 metres, he bobbed and weaved over for an excellent try.

Clitheroe just about shaded

possession in the second half, but could not put together enough phases of play to force the score. A penalty after 60 minutes

looked promising, until the kick ricocheted off the crossbar and was cleared away by a grateful Dale player. How costly that would be. Then after attacking deep in the

Dale half, the ball was turned over and the hosts launched an all-out flowing move that swept up the field for a fine score. Refusing to succumb, Clitheroe

raced back and laid siege to the home try line and were eventually rewarded with a five metre scrum. With the ball won and Dale

back peddling, Clitheroe drove over and Thatcher pounced, but the conversion just sailed wide.

WADDINGTON ended a recent bad run with a narrow win courtesy of a

late clincher. Struggling for players and

still with no full-time keeper, Paul Parkington was given the No.l shirt for the game. The Tangerines started

superbly in a high tempo game with good passing and moving. They made it 1-0 when a

delightful in-swinging free-kick hx>m player-boss Matt Day found James Rawlinson, who powered in an unstoppable header. Skipton took control and

levelled as an attacker found space on the right to side-foot into the comer. They carried on in the second half, but the hosts looked dangerous on the break. From a quick free-kick by

Punchard, man-of-the-match Cengiz Avci found Jackson, who released Gari Haslam to slot home on bis debut. That should have wrapped it up, but from a free kick Parkington parried and a striker finished well. This spurred the Tangerines

on, and with five minutes left a long ball found Warren Jackson, who outpaced the defence and was hacked down in full flight. Up stepped Haslam to send

the keeper the wrong way, but hit the right post. Waddington then won a corner deep into injury time, Waterhouse Boated in and captain Avd outmuscled his marker to head home a winner.
