Smith’s Blues eyes fixed on county glory
by Dan Black Si--
CLITHEROE boss Peter Smith has his eyes firmly set on -the final of the LFA Co-Operative Challenge Trophy after his side earned their place in the final eight of the competition with victory over
Fleetwood Town. First half goals from Nathan Taylor and
Andrew Naylor, followed by a strike from Jason Jones just after the interval, gave the Blues a deserved 3-0 victory over Conference North opposition on Tuesday night. Smith said: “ I thought the lads were
outstanding because we were playing a decent team, so to beat them was fantastic. “They had a lot of big players among their
ranks, but we performed extremely well on the night and now we are in the last eight so hopefully we can get a decent draw. “I always say it’s nice to still be in a cup, and
we have done quite well in those competitions this year. I t ’s a massive thing for clubs like Clitheroe to get to a final, because it gives the club a huge boost. I t would be a big achieve ment for us, and i t ’s always nice to get to a final. Then, if we can move into the top half of the league, things will be looking good for us.’’ Smith outlined the importance of boimcing
back at Shawbridge after watching his side crash out of the FA Trophy in a goal-fest at Moor Lane against fellow UniBond First Division North stugglers Salford City. The Blues found themselves chasing a two-
Ifc-.
goal deficit after the opening quarter-of-an- hmu-, which was halved 10 minutes later when Taylor scored from the spot after Alan Coar was felled in the box. However, the hosts added a third just after the half-hour mark and'took a two-goal cushion into the interval. The Blues further reduced the arrears in the
49th minute when Danny Williams converted Taylor’s centre and did so again with 15 inin- utes remaining when Coar headed home from a free kick after Salford scored their fourth in the 72nd minute to make it 4-3. Then, despite pil ing on the pressure in search of an equaliser, the hosts broke and scored again in added time. Smith added: “Our defending as a team on
Saturday was equivalent to that of a Sunday morning performance. I t was terrible and we had quite a few players off their game. You
can’t win games when you defend like that. You expect to win games when you score three goals, but we had three or four players not at the races and we were punished for sloppy defending, so I was very disappointed and I let the lads know that after the game. ^ “I will change the starting XI from Saturday when we go back there at the weekend, I can guarantee that. They had two good strikers and their midfield caused us problems. We did not get our wing-backs or wingers into the game and we really needed them to push on. We gifted them far too much space, sat back and we didn’t create as many chances.” Salford currently occupy 20th in the league
table with seven points and are six points below Clitheroe in 17th place, though Salford
.have two games in hand. But Smith is ready to put things right and is mging his side to rectify their wrongs when Saturday comes. He said: “To get a clean sheet on Tuesday
after conceding five vras brilliant and just what we needed to give us that confidence and belief again. I asked them for a good performance against Fleetwood and they came up with the goods. We have a point to prove on Saturday, so hopefully will get our just rewards on our second attempt against Salford. The lads will want to prove a point, so hopefully normal service will resume so we can go out there, play our football and win. “The team has proved that they can bounce
■
back, and it was that spirit that impressed me the most because you could see that they
wanted to go out and win on Tues day night. They now have the chance to go back to Salford on Sat urday and do it again by coming back with three points.” Clitheroe will
then go on to play Harrogate Rail way Athletic a t Shawbridge on Tuesday with kick-off at 7-45pm.
