2008 was a record year for sixth form students at Burnley College with 84% of A Level students gaining high grades A-C and 53% A-B. For the fourth year in a row students from A Level and Advanced Vocational programmes achieved a 100% pass rate. Over 290 students from the College have now progressed to university.


The students and, their family members were joined by a host of specially invited guests including the Mayorand Mayoress of Bumley, head teachers of local high schools, county and borough councillors, representatives from the Learning and Skills Council and the University of Central Lancashire, local employers and the College's governing board.


The evening commenced with a welcome address by Chair of Governors, Shelagh Derwent, an introduction to the awards by College Principal, John Smith, and an inspirational view of life as a Bumley College student by Student Governor, Carrie Wilson. Carrie has now progressed to Leicester University to read International Relations and plans to pursue a career as a global aid worker in the future. The awards were presented by former A


■ Level students Shagufta Anwar and Katy Thornton. After completing her A Levels at the College, Shagufta read History at


' Manchester University. She now teaches at Marsden Heights Community College. Katy studied English and Film Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she graduated with a Erst class honours degree. She is now an Information and Sales Co-ordinator for the Pendlc Leisure Trust, marketing attractions including the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival and the Manchester Camerata's seasons at the Colne Municipal Hall.


Graham Woolley, who studies Advanced Level Music at the College, entertained the guests with a specially devised acoustic guitar presentation. When congratulating the students on their outstanding achievements, John Smith Principal of Bumley College recognised the encoumgement of parents and the dedication of College staff.


"The outstanding success of our sixth form students deserves special recognition and that is what this event is about. I am immensely proud of our awards winners who have achieved something special but 1 am equally proud of the many young people who have worked hard and achieved their goals with us this year".
