the sort of person who pushes himself for ward for election is invariably unsuitable for office.

I ■ I have therefore not been much inter

ested in the contest going on, on the other, side of the pond, between the Vietnam war hero and the dusky screen idol. They- are both playing their chosen roles to per fection, t o I have no idea what, if any thing, is the reality under the greasepaint. My interest, however, has been stirred

by the ex-Mayor of Wassilla and current Governor.of Alaska^ She is certainly something of a novelty. The role she has chosen to play, in this

most professional piece of theatre, is that of the member of the audience who has accidentally stumbled on to the stage and found herself, all unprepared, playing the role of Everyman. Not for her the high falutin’ phrases,

the perfect family or the impeccable cock tail dress. Not for her a lot of new fangled ideas and policies. Oh, no! Plain old, prac tical principles, learned at her grand mother’s knee, are good enough for her.

She even manages to sound convincing

when she tells us that she does not trust establishment politicians - and blinds many to the perfectly obvious fact that she is one herself. But there is, nevertheless, something

different about her. Whatever her moti vation, she treasures life. Can you imagine an English politician,

who already had children, finding out that she was pregnant with a Down’s Syndrome child and not having the foetus destroyed and flushed away? And, if I am wrong about that - and I often am wrong - can you imagine an English politician, in the moment of her greatest triumph, at the National Convention, accepting her nomination, bringing all her children, including the one with Down’s Syndrome,

The first was the young

British diver, Tom Daley, who has had to face the media circus seemingly drawn to him like a magnet. The at ten t io n he received was relentless, but he acted with great maturity which belied his tender age of 14.

Sadly, in his first event which

involved diving in unison with a partner, they performed disas trously and finished last in the competition. His partner, who is 26, quick ly put all the blame on young

Tom. I think he was way out of order as it is a team event and one should share the responsibil ity for success or failure. I think there are two lessons to be learned hera Firstly Tom did fantastically

well for one so young. Herein the Ribble Valley we have a real opportunity to encourage the young people amongst us. Who knows what they could achieve if they are given the right envi ronment in which to grow up. I t ’s easy to criticise and to

point the finger, but there is something wonderful about being able to offer praise and encouragement. Or like Tom’s team mate we can place all the blame on someone elsa' Secondly I could not help but

be impressed by the American swimmer, Michael Phelps who was going for seven gold medals. He is the most success ful Olympian ever. What drives him to continue to win more? It’s easy to be cynito and say the money, but I think that is

EACHING orphans in Africa has given a student teacher a new per spective on life in the classroom.

Sarah Kellett (21) has just returned

from Tanzania where she taught in a local school and orphanage in the poverty- stricken village of Moshi in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. Sarah, pictured with some of her

charges, is in the final year of a teaching degree at Leeds University, and spent two months in Tanzania, where she also climbed the famous mountain. Her family live in Brockhall ^^Hage. She said: “Working there was a real

experience and something which will help me when I start teaching properly back home.

- “The children there were extremely

poor, but really keen on their education which was good to see. I was teaching English at first and then taught at the orphanage with some of the little ones. “I managed to pick up a bit of Swahili

while I was there and I tried to teach the younger ones in that. “I tried to be creative and get them

involved in lessons. I t was a real eye-open er and I would love to teach abroad again.” Sarah, who formerly amended St

Joseph’s, Park Hill Primary School, and St EBlda’s RC High in Burnley, organised a football tournament for the youngsters - but was shocked when more than 200 children turned up. Some of the children were even given

the honour of sporting a prized Pendle Forest Uhder-lls Mt which Sarah’s broth er, Robert, donated from his football team in Fenca Footballs for the mass Mckabout were

donated by Global Hugs, of Burnley. Sarah added: “I would like to thank

- eveiyone who has supported me including Helliwell’s Funeral Directors, Nelson, who gave me £250 for school equipment. Bum- ley Police Sports and Social Club also donated £100 for malaria medication.” “Myself and some of the other volun

teers are now trying to raise money to buy the orphanage and give it back so that the staff do not have to pay the rent.”

Ins and outs of staging a play

Theatrical Society - could hold the answer. I t is planning a “put on a play” event in November, where active participants will be taken on a whirlwind tour of backstage and behind-the-scenes melodrama to dis cover the many vital ingredients for put ting on a play. They will learn the art of stage make-up,

E

marvel a t fan ta s tic costumes, paint scenery, control the lights, cue sound effects, learn a dance routine with the young RATS, sing a song and set up a stage under the guidance of a stage manager. They will also find out how actors leam all those lines and banish stage fright! After all this preparation, participants

can sit back, relax and watch the play they have worked on unfold before their eyes, making use of everything they have pro duced throughout the evening. As if all this wasn’t enough, there will

even be supper and a bar. The exact date of the event is still to be

set, but organisers are looking a t early November. Watch this space!

reading the book because “it is a huge adventure for all the girls”. She added: “They have just started the

Royal Ballet School and Lara is being very very mean to Ellie, but in the end they found out she was very homesick so they all helped her and then they all made friends and they eventually did a perform ance with the Royal Ballet.”
