The event will be held on Saturday in Clitheroe United Reformed Church Hall from 10 a.m. to 12- 30 p.m., and it is hoped that this

Acclaimed poet will be guest of honour
A POET from Manchester, whose debut collection was published to huge critical acclaim, is to read in Clitheroe tonight (Septem ber 18th). Matthew Welton, pictured,
will take to the stage with local writer Theresa Robson at Clitheroe Books, in Moor Lane, as part of the 2008 Rib- ble Valley Poetry Readings series. Matthew’s first collection.
The Book of Matthew, was published in 2003' and promptly won the prestigious Jerwood-Aldeburgh First Collection Prize.- Matthew, who was bom in
1969 in Nottingham and cur rently lives in Manchester, is a senior lecturer in creative writing at the University of Bolton. His poetry has also
appeared in the anthologies. First Pressings (Faber) and New Poetries II (Carcanet). Matthew is a regular col
laborator with the composer Larry Coves and has gained a strong reputation as a per former of his work. Jo Harding, owner of
Clitheroe Books and organis er of the Ribble Valley Poet ry Readings series, said: “Matthew’s work has a unique and distinct sensibili
ty, and we are delighted to welcome a writer of his talent to Clitheroe for what promis es to be a fantastic event.” Theresa Robson is a former
journalist and now works in local government. She is near ing the end of a degree in cre ative writing at the Universi ty of Bolton and along with Jo Harding recently edited a poetry anthology. Slip Through the Silence: Facing Adversity with Verse. The reading starts at 7 for

Top act to headline at club
UNIQUE live act The Kings Cross Hot Club are playing at the Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Club later this month. The band, which was a huge success
when it appeared at the club last November, will play at The Swan and Royal Hotel in Clitheroe, the club’s new venue, on Friday, September 26th. Formed at the dawn of the Millenni
um, The Kings Cross Hot Club is a unique gathering of two former street musicians, gypsy guitarist Phil Grispo and Bruce Beach, abetted by an impres sive array of classically trained musi cians, wandering minstrels and an actress turned lead vocalist.
With a focus on Gypsy swing aug
mented by a powerful brass section and expertly exiecuted orchestration, the band has been transformed into an in demand live act. It has already had acclaimed appear
ances at Italy’s Riva Garda Festival, Birmingham Jazz Festival, Wigan International Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s. The gig, which is the first of the club’s
new season, will be staged in the func tion room at The Swan and Royal in Castle Street with tickets costing £10 on the door, £8 for members, half price for students and free for the under 16s.
