Service will remember George’s wonderful life

by Julie Magee

A CELEBRATION of the life of Grindleton character George Hebden, who died on Monday at the age of 72, will be held tomorrow a t St Ambrose Church. Originally from Burnley,'where

he used to run the family firm Heb den Brothers’ Motors, George moved to the village after marrying life-long friend Pippa Munro in September 2006. Born in Burnley in 1936, George

was the third son of Eobert and Hilda Hebden. He joked that his parents could not agree on his name, so his mother decided to name him after King George V. However, soon afterwards the king died and was replaced by King Edward VIII, who abdicated 10 months later, with King George VI then taking the crown. George often quipped that he lived through the reign of three kings in his first year.

From the outset, school was not

something George relished. Suffer ing with dyslexia, he hated English with a passion, excelling at subjects like maths, physics and technology instead. In these formative years, it was

obvious that one of George’s main passions was for motors, not sur prising considering his father, Robert, was in the automobile industry owning Hebden Brothers’ Motors in Accrington Road in Burnley. While he was still a teenager

George built himself a motorbike from scratch, using any spare parts he could muster. But at the age of 15, George was involved in a bad accident which left him with a shredded left knee and unable to walk for several years. Eventually he managed to walk once again without the aid of the

“He said to me when I was a little girl ‘one day tellies will be flat and people will have them on their walls!”’ In 1979 he designed a house for

daughter Tracey, which incorporat ed solar power and was completely self sufficient. Unfortunately, the plans were wasted when George failed to gain planning permission for the access to the property. In his spare time, he was a chari

ty stalwart and was heavily involved with Padiham Round Table and Rotary Clubs. He was also a member of several

organisations that concentrated on helping troubled youngsters. These included the Lancashire

crutches and walking sticks that had become so familiar and he took his first apprenticeship job in the electronics industry. George often recalled how busy he had been sell ing television sets for Queen Eliza beth’s Coronation. However, his passion for automo

biles could not escape him and he joined his father’s business, working as a technician, engineer and even tually becoming managing director.

. In his spare time, George enjoyed rally driving and was crowned the rally champion for Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire for two consecutive years. In 1958, George, then 21, mar

ried his first wife, Gillian Cooper, and the couple had two daughters, Tracey and Debbie. He continued to build up the

family business winning the Austin Rovers’ franchise. George even went on to design and build a new state-of-the-art sales garage in Tod- morden Road, Burnley. Ahead of his time, George was

always interested in ways to save energy and the environment. He was fascinated by new tech nology - daughter Debbie recalled:

A run for the whole family

RESIDENTS from Read and Simonstone are being asked to don their trainers and take part in a family fun run all in the name of charity. The Read and Simonstone

Run for Life 2008 will take place on Saturday, September 20th. Setting off from the Stork

Hotel inWhalley Road, Simon stone, at 11-30 a.m., the 2.7-mile route will take competitors through the two villages before returning to the tunnel at the pub. Cash raised from the event ■will

go to Rainbows Children’s Nurs ery in Barrowford, Macmillan Cancer Support and Lancashire and South Cumbria Kidney Patients’ Association. Last year runners raised more

than £3,600 and organisers hope this year’s run will be even more successful. As well as the main event, fam

ilies. will get the chance to take part in a host of other actmties including games, bouncy castles, slides and quizzes throughout the day.The fun will carry on well into the evening with a Cheesy Jeans Disco for the adults at the Stork Hotel. ■. Organisers are also looking for

volunteers to help out. Anyone wanting to register for the event can do so'now at the Stork or other businesses in the -village and more information is available from organiser Mr Warren East- ham by contacting him on

.07889366688 or easthamwar- ren@yahoo.co.uk.

Juvenile Liaison Association and the Ocean Youth Club organisa-r tion. He became a skipper for the latter and took many young people, who needed help and guidance, on cruises across the Irish Sea and the English Channel. One of his greatest achievements

was sailing the Lady Grania ship, which took Catholic and protestant children from Ireland and made them work together. In his spare time he also used to

enjoy the technical side of the the atre and was involved with Burnley. Garrick Club amateur dramatic organisation for many years. After leaving the family business,

George worked for Sun Alliance as the Northern Corporation Manag er covering an area from Peterbor ough to Aberdeen. When he retired he became involved with the Lan cashire Mutual Guarantee Society, which helped small fledgeling busi nesses start up. He also worked with the Prince’s Trust. After marrying Pippa on Sep

tember 22nd, 2006, George imme diately threw himself into village life in Grindleton, endearing him self to everyone that met him. He joined the Glitheroe and Dis trict Caledonian Society, became a

health and safety officer for St Ambrose Church in Grindleton and even helped draft a solution to Grindleton’s road safety problems. George was also a familiar sight

around the Valley in his lemon- drop-coloured VW transit van which he customised himself. It was in this van, which was

powered in part by solar energy, that he went travelling around Europe with Pippa. George could also be seen riding

around the Ribble Valley on his electrically-assisted push bike! Step-father to Kate and Grant,

George, who was referred to as “Captain Birdseye” by his six grandchildren, Craig, Kirsty, Vic toria, Samantha, Nina and Nicola, was a man who exuded warmth, humour and kindness. Described by Pippa as “an outra

geous flirt” in the nicest possible way, George, whose novelty ties were a talking point, could start up a conversation with anyone, while his old school traditional values, made him a true gent. His hot tub was another of his

passions - he had one before most people had even heard of them in this country - and redesigned Pippa’s garden to accommodate one. His other eccentricities includ ed making sure he took a shower outside every day, whatever the weather. More recently, George became

interested in writing and joined Clitheroe Writers’ Group. Two pieces he penned will appear

in the group’s anthology - an achievement he would have been proud of considering the struggles he had with the English language when he was younger. The celebration of life service will

be followed by cremation at Burn ley Crematorium. Our picture shows George and Pippa Hebden. (s)

School in Simonstone Lane on Thurs days once a month and anyone with an interest in gardening is welcome to go along from the village or further afield. This year the club has introduced a

major change by extending the season which now starts earlier and runs through until June. Next Thursday, September 25th,

people will be able to buy and hear about plants from Dianne Harrison

from Avant Gardens in Leyland. The plant sale runs from 7-30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and after a short talk people can buy plants and talk to Dianne about them. There will also be light refresh

ments. Membership of the club is £6 or guests can pay £1 per visit. Secretary Mrs Marion Kelly said

they are hoping to attract new faces this year to the new look club which has been in existence for more than 50 years. If anyone wishes to know more

they can contact her on 01282 773228.
