Blues stun old boss

Skelmersdale United . .3 CliUieroc.......................5 CLITHEROE made for mer boss Tommy Lawson eat his words by knocking the league leaders from their perch in humbling style on Saturday. The Stanley Park man

ager's pre-match notes cast aspersions on the visitors, stating that his old side "rely on brute strength rather than skill and abili ty". Lawson should have

known better, as, despite taking an early two-goal lead, old charge Craig Sargeson served up a quick reminder from the penalty spot and a master class in finishing to level the scores before half-time. Scott Redhead put

Clitheroe ahead after the break, before Jonathan Smith glanced home a header at the near post, and Danny Toronczak made it five. Sargeson epitomised

Clitheroe's skill and ability, which was equally matched on the opposing wing by David Hankin and full backs Redhead and Adam Kozlowski. These four players were

at the root of Clitheroe's most penetrating play, pulling the team back into the game after Skelmers dale netted on nine and 20 minutes. The hosts commanded

the game from the off, and took the lead when Sean McConville's deflected

the Bliies striker pulling the ball back for Sargeson to send a strike over the United defence and into the back of the net. However Skelmersdale

could quite easily have sneaked a third before the break via an own goal, but for Mann clawing the ball away. A defensive header by

a Craig Sargeson

shot from a corner found its way past James Mann. Skelmersdale doubled

tha t advantage when a Redhead clearance to McConville was fired back across goal for Chris Almond to tuck away. But from the restart,

thanks to a charging run from Kozlowski, Paul Osborne was cut down in the box to set up Sargeson with the first strike of his instant reply. Carl Lomax sent John

son through on goal in the build up to Clitheroe's sec ond three minutes later.

Smith to keep out Adam Birchall looped over the Clitheroe stopper, but Mann just managed to get back in time to punch the ball to safety. Redhead's second alf

strike came from way out on the right wing from a Hankin short corner, the left back whipping in a diagonal ball that eluded everyone in the box to find the back of the net. Smith netted his first

Clitheroe strike with the best headed goal the side has seen in years, effort lessly glancing home Red head's right-wing free kick from 12 yards. And although Lomax

saw his volley well saved by Skelmersdale keeper Ian Lowe, he joined in the celebrations for Clitheroe's fifth strike when Toron czak nodded home Lowe's parried effort. Skelmersdale pulled

back a third goal five min utes from time through substitute Anthony Murt, but by then Clitheroe had put the game, and Skelmersdale's automatic promotion chances, to bed.

Tipton double keeps Hurst Green in hunt

Settle United.............1 Hurst Green............... 4 A QUICK-FIRE Simon Tipton double gave Hurst Green an important victo ry.

The visitors, looking for

another three points to keep up the pressure on league leaders Rimington, made three changes from their President’s Cup defeat, with captain Bam- ber returning, Stuart Mal- ley fit again after knee trouble and the veteran Ian Barton starting up front. Ian Simpson dropped

into midfield as the visi tors deployed five across the centre. Barton was influential

in most of Green’s good work, and his dummy from a Steve Young clearance saw Tipton delicately chip

the keeper to put Hurs t' Green one up. Green doubled their lead

as Seedall released Barton, and he lobbed the keeper from the edge of the area. The third came with 10

minutes left in the first half, following some neat play from Bamber, and Tipton found Barton, whose nonchalant flick set Tipton free, and he smashed the ball inside the near post. As the second half com

menced, so did the wintry weather and a predicted Settle onslaught, coupled with a strong wind at their backs.

Keeper Young made two

great saves, but the home side pulled one back as a free kick was floated in and the veteran Wildman looped a header over

R3IO0MeUiEBSIS}!ie

Young. The away side struggled

to recreate their good play of the first half, and so brought on Goar and Bolton to freshen things up.

Goar’s bustling play up

front put the home side on the back foot, and Bolton’s physical presence ensured that the pressure was firm ly on United’s shoulders. Green finished off the

scoring towards the end as Malley headed in a Tipton corner, and ensured the vil lagers stretched their unbeaten league run to 13 games. Hurst Green face strug

gling Kelbrook tonight at Smithy Row, kick-off 6-15 p.m., before a potential title decider a t leaders Rimington on Saturday, kick-off 2-15 p.m.

DINCKLEY’S Jonathan Walker took a creditable third place in the first round of the British Open Championship at the Three Sisters Circuit near Wigan last week. The 19-year-old overcame some

dubious tactics from his rivals to get his 2008 domestic karting season off to a strong start, and now aims to launch a major assault on the British Super 1 title. ’The 0 Plate - as the event is

known, after the number plate bear ing an 0 awarded to the winner - is one of British karting’s most presti gious titles, and is renowned for the winner-takes-all nature of the driv ing.

Walker’s weekend started reason ably enough, when in timed qualify

ing he posted the fifth fastest time. Starting from the third row of the

grid for his two heats, he survived a crash in his first race to finish sixth. In the second. Walker had no such

problems, and picked his way through from fifth on the grid to win. And his aggregate finishes left him on the front row of the grid, along side Shaun Carter. With the competition hotting up,

some drivers became a little desper ate, which Walker found out to his cost. As the karts tore down the circuit’s

long main straight into the first cor ner, the Dinckley driver was rammed from behind and knocked off the cir cuit, allowing the pack to stream past him. He said: “I got going and finished

second. I was so angry I just tore through the field and was pleased to

SAWLEY canoeist Jonnie Schofield paddled a step closer to a dream place in the Beijing Olympics at the first regatta of the year on Saturday. The former Clitheroe

Royal Grammar School student, and his K2 500m partner Ben Brown, con firmed they were the best pair on the day at that dis tance to qualify for the Senior European Champi onships in May - and a good result in Milan would see them off to China in August. Almost rocket propelled

out of the starting gate, Schofield and Brown had

the race pretty much sewn up by 150 metres, where they had a lead of a boat length over the field. And although nearest

rivals Paul Wycherley and Ed Mckeever worked to reduce the deficit, the pair knew this was their race, and will now continue their build up to the Champi onships in Milan and Olympic qualification. Schofield also finished

second in the men’s indi vidual K1 500m at the same Nottingham regatta, 2.1 seconds behind Tim Brabants, whose win vir tually guarantees Olympic selection.

agm CLITHEROE Cobras embark on Iheir first-ever H a cricket tour this summer, when 23 players head across the border into Yorkshire for their very own bat tle of the Roses. Both the Under 11s and Under 13s are to take part in

the three-match trip, to face teams from York and Har rogate, wearing shirts sponsored by Accelero, Ribblcs- dale High School’s 2008 Young Enterprise Company. Pupils from the Clitheroe technology college have

designed and made an educational global warming package for primary school pupils, which consists of a board game, schemes of work and work sheets aimed at KS2 pupils. Part of the profits are being used to sponsor the

shirts for the tour, which will have the Accelero logo on and the mission statement “Accelerating to a greener future”. Expecting a fierce contest. Cobras chairman and tour

co-ordinator Farouk Hussain expects the trip to be a “great learning experience” for his young players. He said: “This is the first time that something like

this has ever taken place at Clitheroe CC, and all the lads and 10 accompanying adults arc extremely excited. “We feel that cricket is not only a participatory sport,

but also provides great opportunity for people to learn about each other and make new friends while visiting different locations. “This could be the first of many such tours." Haylcigh Jones, Jordan Ferguson, Beth Banks and

Wolves Under 8 s ................. ..................................9 Globe Bulloitgh Park.......................................... 0 THE young Wolves made it to the cup final at the first time of asking, follmring this fantastic display of passing football. Globe started well, but the home team imposed

themselves on the game, and went into the interval with a three-goal lead. And some great play in the second period was

rewarded by a further six goals. A hat-trick apiece from Frankie Jackson and

Charlie Dewhurst, was added to with strikes from James Scorah and Owen Jackson (2). Wolves will now play Langho Juniors Blue in the

final on Sunday, April 20th at Old Blackburnians Playing Fields, kick-off 10-30 a.m. Wolves Under 1 6 s ............... i ................................2 Feniscowles............................................................1 UNLUCKY Wolves went down to defeat against Feniscowles. The locals were unfortunate to be two goals

behind at the break, having seen Sam Hartley hit the underside of the bar and Chris Cottam and Matt Riley go close. A Sam Cherry corner was tapped home by Ryan

Duplessis to signal a fight back, and Kris Holden netted Wolves’ second at 3-2, but it wasn’t enough, as Feniscowles finished them off on the break. Man-of-the-match was Doug Grimes. Oswaldlwislle Rangers.........................................5 Wolves Under 1 6 s ................................................. 1 THE Wolves rounded off a challenging season in defeat. Oswaldwistle caught the locals out twice early

on, and a third goal gave thems a mountain to climb in the second half, before a fourth killed off the game. After a foul on Matt Riley in the box, the same

player tucked away his consolation penalty in style. A fifth goal sealed a well-deserved win for the

home side. Wolves’ star man was Sam Hartley.

Wolves Under 9s R e d ............................................0 Barrowford Celtic Orange...................................5 UNDER pressure from the start. Wolves had no answer to Barrowford. Celtic led 4-0 at half-time, and added a fifth after

the break, before Wolves fought back in an end-to- end battle that unfortunately reaped no reward. Readstorie Utd Under 10s Brierfield Celtic .............

GOALS from Matty Hale and man-of-the-match Oliver Dugdale saw Readstone to an excellent vic tory over Brierfield Celtic. However, the team were then beaten 7-0 by

Trawden Celtic in the Consolation Cup. Readstone Utd Under IS Girls .......................... 7 Wilpshire ...............................................................0 A BRACE apiece for Natalie Cassidy, Melissa Het- herington and Niamh McCarthy saw United well on their way to a convincing victory. Amie Lucas completed the rout, and Sophie Hin-

dle was named player-of-the-match. Langho Juniors Under 1 2 .....................................3 Darwen

.......... 2

LANGHO signed off a disappointing season in style by proving that there is promise in this team. A fine win from a niggly encounter saw second

half goals from Galium Everett, with his 10th of the season, man-of-the-match Joel Phelps and captain Sean Holmes to overcome a 1-0 half-time deficit. Sloppy defending allowed Danven to net a second

after Everett equalised, but Phelps’ sumptuous free kick and Holmes’ winner on the break saw the side finish on a high. Langho Juniors Under 12s ...................................1 Wilpshire................................................................3 LANGHO took the lead, only for Wilpshire to come from behind to ■win. Langho dominated the first half, and went ahead

through Sean Holmes, courtesy of a teasing cross from man-of-the-match Joel Phelps. Other chances were created, but not taken, and

Wilpshire equalised after the break and ran in a fur ther two goals for victory.
