hose with a little savvy will know• that Lotus was swallowed up by Pro ton way back in 1997.
It was a smart move in many ways. Lotus
was foundering financially, but the brand equity would add significant clout to a Pro ton badge that was desperate for global cred ibility. The fact that many are still surprised at
learning of the Proton and Lotus tie-up is something of an indictment of Proton’s pres ence in this country which has been near to invisible. The first signs of the partnership came in
1999 when Proton launched the Satria GTi. Lotus took the standard Satria three-door hatchback and added a little Hethel magic. The result was a superb handling “hot- hatch”, capable of humbling some of the more well-known brands. The Satria GTi was well received by all
who drove it, but did not manage serious sales. It is still one of the smartest used hot hatchback buys around. . Keen to learn from the GTi experience.

Perodua Myvi - a rebodied Daihatsu Cha- raiie. Over here, the list of competitors is a good deal longer and more illustrious. The Savvy will have to shape up or ship out. The Savvy comes in two different variants,
the Street, available from £5,995, and the Style, from £7,295. Higher specification Style models offer air conditioning with a pollen filter and alloy wheels as additional standard items. Both models have the comprehensive Pro
ton Peace of Mind Warranty Package which includes 3 year/60,000 mile warranty and three years’ free RAC cover. First impressions are promising. I t is a
neatly-proportioned car, measuring 3,7I0mm in length. This compares with 3,456mm for the (iitroen Cl and 3,495mm for the Kia Picanto, so it is a little bigger than the city car norm, coming half way between these tots and the 3,917mm of a supermini like a Ford Fiesta. This means that access to the back
through the rear doors is not as cramped as in certain city cars, helped in no small part by a generously stretched wheel at each cor ner stance. Where the Savvy is not quite as good as rivals like the Citroen Cl is in terms of interior widthfor which it breaks the tape at 1,345mm. Needless to say, you would not want to sit three adults across the back. Still, there is a reasonable amount of luggage space, with perfectly flat-folding 50:50 rear seats contributing to a 909 litre boot capacity when they are flat. Only one engine is available at the
moment, but it is a pleasantly punchy 1.2- litre unit that makes 74 b.h.p. ’This translates into the ability to hit 60 m.p.h. in 12.2 sec onds, which is very good indeed for a vehicle in the city car class, as is the 106 m.p.h. top speed. This is a car with genuine motorway abili
ty. Certain elements have been engineered into the Savvy that will give you a taste of what it is like to drive one of the world’s best handling vehicles. These elements involve engineering a new,
stronger and more rigid chassis (platform) and bringing Lotus Dynamics into a small car, resulting in a vehicle that is superior in handling, safety, responsiveness and which has good power-to-weight ratio - all the nec essary ingredients needed to make a power ful and enjoyable small packaga The Savvy has been tested and verified to
be stronger than the German and Italian marques that were used as a benchmark in the development process. Although it is doubtful that you will step from a Savvy knowing exactly what a Lotus Exige must feel like as a result, if the results gained from cars like the Satria and the Impian are any thing to go by, the association wll have tangi ble results. The interior is not going to win any awards
for materials quality, but there has been an obvious effort spent on making it look more dynamic than the usual South-East Asian fare. Three colours are offered, comprising Stratos (metallic blue). Midnight (metallic black) and Magma, (solid chilli red). The exterior styling is pretty sharp and
the detailing is a lot better. Check out the front lamp clusters and the tidy way the rear wiper has been integrated for examples of how Proton styling is evolving.

The rear seat backs can also be folded down to create a totally flat load floor, serving up a total of 1,050 litres of available space. Suzuki Splash sister model aside, no other city car can touch this. The hip point for the front seat has been deliber ately set high to make getting in and out of the car easy, offering a command ing -view of the road and taking advan tage of that high roofline.

level, with a 64 b.h.p. 1.0-litre three- cylinder petrol unit and the range con tinues with a punchier 85 b.h.p. 1.2-litre power plant. This engine is also offered with the option of an automatic gear box, which would certainly take the strain out of nose-to-tail city traffic. I thought that the Agila looked good
on paper, with big car features such as optional ESP stability control and four airbags. And, of course, it is very attrac tive in terms of running costs, especially
if you opt for the diesel variant. I was impressed with the car’s responsive power steering, agile change of direction and lack of body roll. Sixty is around 17 seconds away from rest in the 1.0-litre model on the way to close to 100 m.p.h., so motonvay travel, if not rapid, is well ivithin this VauxhaU’s ability.
Value for money All engines should return well over 40 m.p.g. in ordinary day-to-day use and
service and insurance costs should also be very low. Prices are competitive with rivals like the Hyundai Arnica and Chevrolet Matiz, starting from under £ 8,000.
Could I Live With One? The original first-generation Agila
only appealed to the retired. This ver sion has a much wider attraction - ideal as a familyis second car or as a starter model for a youngster.
