Nurse pair to the rescue

by Faiza Afzaal

TWO heroic nurses who came to the aid of a 16-year-old boy hit by a train said “we just did what any nurse would do”. Mrs Stephanie Zak (43), who

works as a practice nurse at the Whalley Medical Centre and Mrs Justine Ibbotson (40), who is an anaesthetic nurse at Royal Black burn Hospital, were travelling on the Manchester to Clitheroe service when it came to an abrupt halt after the teenager had been hit. The quick-thinking friends, both

of Clitheroe, got off the train to administer first aid to the young ster, who was struck as he walked alongside the tracks at Tonge Viaduct, in Bolton, last Wednesday evening. Mrs Zak and Mrs Ibbotson’s

friend, Lorraine Martin (45), remained on the train to reassure shocked and traumatised passen gers.

Speaking about the moment they

discovered someone had been hit, mum-of-four Mrs Zak said: “The

three of us were on our way back home from a shopping trip. The train had only just left Bolton sta tion when it suddenly stopped. “An announcement was made

that somebody had been hit and officials were waiting for the emer gency services to arrive. “Justine and I immediately got

off the train and went to help the injured boy. “It was pitch black outside and

very cold. The boy was unconscious and suffered serious head injuries, but we were relieved to find he was breathing. We both kept him stable until the paramedics made their way up to the track. “Safety procedures because of

where the train had stopped meant it took the paramedics a bit longer than normal.” She added: “We just did what

any nurse would in that situation. I t’s instinctive. We are trained for situations like this and just deal with it as it comes. “There is so much to be careful of

these days with legislation and red tape, but I would hope that anyone in our situation would do the sama”

who has been working as a nurse for the past 18 years, added: “In situa tions like this your instincts take over. “We are just glad that we were

able to help the boy until the para medics arrived.” The line was closed for several

hours. It is understood that one service was cancelled and buses were laid on for passengers travel ling between Blackburn and Clitheroe. A Network Rail spokesman said:

“We were informed of the accident' at 8-30 p.m. and closed the line so the emergency services could reach it.

“Off-duty nurses got off the train

and helped the injured boy on to a spinal board and he was transport ed on the train to the ambulance.” A spokesman from Royal Bolton Hospital was unable to comment on the condition of the teenager, who was from Astley Bridge, but it is understood he remained in the hos pital’s high dependency unit until last Friday.

A HUGE excavator and a banner announcing half a century of trade . greeted visitors travelling into Clitheroe along Whalley Road this week. Plant and tool hire company Brian
