THE Red Rose county cartie out on top in this hugely entertaining game. The hosts raced into an
early lead, but after the turn around, Otley began to show they had some class in their ranks, and, had the game gone on any longer, could have snatched the game. However the result,
while being one of prestige, was incidental in the larg er scheme of things. The Otley outfit were in
town for the weekend, and with former Clitheroe player Mike Wilyman propping up their front row they were here for a hard game and a good “craic”. They had both in
spades, as Clitheroe fielded a fairly strong team. With no league points to
worry about, Clitheroe threw the ball about with a welcome gay abandon. It was a joy to behold,
seeing big lumpy prop for wards running with the ball and linking.up with the back line a t every opportunity. Clitheroe were soon able to rattle up a few tries, with Ollie McEntyre, Declan Fitzhenry and Martin Lafranceschina all crossing the whitewash. But after the break,
Otley began to creep back into the game. Soon they crossed for a
few tries, and Clitheroe were wobbling as the gap narrowed. Fortunately, the earlier
scores had built enough of a cushion, and further tries for Ben Graves and anoth er for veteran McEntyre saw them home. On Saturday, Clitheroe
are back in league action, with Chorley the visitors to Littlemoor, kick-off 3 p.m.

THE War of the Roses match saw the Lancashire team lose out. This friendly match was
played in good spirit, with the home team lending two players to the visitors. From the off, the young
sters played their hearts out, and were really in aniongst it with the other Skipton players. They set up most of the
game play for the visitors, and the first half was very one-sided, with Skipton scoring four unanswered tries.
At half-time the captain
pleaded for the Clitheroe team to switch on and play with some pride. As often has been the
case during this season, the home team responded. Suddenly the forwards
had some fire in their bel lies, and good rucking and mauling ensued. From one of these rucks,
Matt Dugdale managed to bulldoze his way over the line to get the momentum and belief back in the ranks. A number of tactical
substitutions were made, and Brian Wood came on at scrum half to provide a solid ball from the base of the scrum. The cheeky youngster
managed to score a brace of tries, and the home team really were in the ascendancy. Tackles came in fast and
hard from the backline, with effort and determina tion from all, but particu lar mention to Ian Poole, who tackled his heart out and ended up on the injury list for his troubles. With two league games
to go against much tougher opposition, the Cavaliers need to be switched on from the first minute not the 41st.

Slinger drives in
JOHN Slinger drove into office as the new captain at Whalley Golf Club on Sat urday. And his big day was met
with testing conditions which saw only two golfers - Ian Hartley and Dave Wetton - claim a share of the twos’ sweep. The competition was
won by Keith Shipston (87-17-70) by a shot from John Hyde (88-17-71). Division One honours
were claimed by Mel Earle (78-77-71) and Neil Ash worth (88-17-71), and prizes in Division Three went to Eric Lord (93-19- 74) and John Harvey (104- 26-78). Keith Allen and Dou
glas Woodburn battled through heavy going in the seniors stableford at Clitheroe GC to produce a photo finish. Both ground out 32 points, but Allen took first prize with the better back nine. Jim Rhodes finished
with two three-pointers to overtake a number of com petitors on the run in, and his 30 points took him into third place. The season’s first medal
and Castle Cup qualifier proved to be heavy going for the majority of com petitors. John Barber proved to
be the exception in Divi sion One, as his nett 68 gave him a three shot cush ion over three-handicapper Dave Wilson. Barry Thomas and Michael Heaps both finished with identical 84-11-73 returns and the former took third place after cards. Peter Lambert came to
the attention of the handi cap committee after win ning the Winter League, and then topping Division Two with a sparkling nett 66. R Dunlop made his presence known with a nett 69 for second, and the two Davids, Kitson and Chippendale, took the minor places. Denis Greenup showed his intent with a 78 to win the best gross. Tony Flanagan was on
fire throughout Sunday’s Three Man Team event, ably-supported by Garry Thompson and Simon Swindells. The trio scored 81 points to take top spot. Flanagan’s 69 gross was

the performance of note, but without the support of his playing partners, would not have counted. Seven points on the 18th
proved crucial to leave them with a three-shot margin over Julian Troup, Paul Connolly and Daniel Preedy. John Berry shot a net 72
in very trying conditions to stake his place as Myt- ton Fold’s amateur repre sentative to join club pro fessional Mike Bardi in the regional final of the Lom bard Trophy, to be held at Hesketh in July. Berry won on a card
play-off against Steve Brooks and Chris Hughes. Division One winner was Ian Collier (73) with Mike Kelbie carding a 74 to ivin Division Two. The gloom lifted just in
time for the Texas Scram ble at Stonyhurst Park - and the competition resulted in a three-way tie on a score of nett 58.2. Jim Walker, Ted Crosby,
Roy Gilmore and John Blockeel emerged as the winners after a card play off.
They finished ahead of
Tony Wright, John Kirk, Tony Lee and Peter Thompson who claimed second spot ahead of Ray Ormerod, Neil Brown, Ian McDonnell and Vinnie Wilkinson. Ladies at Whalley were
in action in the first quali fying round of the Long- worth Cup and LGU medai. Joan Whittaker (97-22-
75) finished ahead of Les ley Lohou (99-23-76) with Iris Sherry (102-24-78) and Frances Geirat (107- 28-79) also going through as qualifiers. Barbara Thornton and
Tracey Bentley (39) won the fourball stableford and Ping qualifier at Clitheroe ahead of Marilyn Fletcher and Kath Townley (35). Third, and reserves for the Ping event, were Jean Ann Speak and Pat Murray (34). The first junior medal at
Clitheroe was a triumph for Harry Lambert, but only after a card play-off with Jack Mercer, both shooting nett 67s. Tom Forrest continued last sea son’s form with an 85-16- 69 return for third prize.

So far - but so close!
CLITHEROE’S Town Pool Team narrowly missed out on the knockout stages of the EPA Interleague National Finals at Great Yarmouth over the weekend. In all, 96 teams com
peted in 32 groups of three. Clitheroe were drawn against London outfit Waterloo, and Derbyshire town Ilke ston, and drew 9-9 in both of their games. But, due to Ilkeston
beating Waterloo 10-3 in the group’s final game, the locals lost out by a point, when a sin gle frame victory over Ilkeston would have suf ficed. Clitheroe’s Paul
Biackbum won all four of his matches, and Simon Thompson and Mark Riley both won three, with two wins apiece for Ian Townson and Adrian Dugdale. Andy Blackburn,
Steve Almond, Eric Barnes and Liam Sut cliffe all had a single vic tory to complete the lineup.
