his family: Mum, Tanya, Dad, Martin, and sister. Amber. Cameron and his family live in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Having a car through the Mutability Car Scheme has helped all the family to get out and about.

THE CAMERONS: A case in point. (S) Like any other young boy,

Cameron loves playing with his trains and trucks. He also enjoys bouncing around on his trampoline. But Cameron also has autism, a developmental disability which affects more than 500,000 people in Britain. Having autism means that

Cameron, along with others like him, can find it very challenpng to communicate or interact with the outside world. This can result in

"Getting Cameron anywhere before we had the car could be quite diffi cult. He would just lie on the floor. In the end we would have to carry him, something Cameron really did n't like and he’d end up punching and screaming.” Cameron’s mum, a full-time carer,

explains further “We used to travel by taxi or bus if we wanted to go anywhere, which made moving around or going out very dif ficult because of Cameron’s condition. Obviously, getting about as a family was a great effort back then.” Then Cameron’s

brand new model has to offer often proves invaluable to peo ple with disabilities. Visit your local dealerships

and you will generally find a Motability specialist fully trained to guide you though its latest model range and answer your questions. Furthermore, the choice of vehicles on offer under the scheme is wider than ever, with many available on low or no advance payment. The scheme has changed

quite a bit in recent times, now offering a wider range of mod els, a more comprehensive selec tion of low advance payments and a pledge to eliminate the uncertainty of constantly changing prices. The introduction of a fixed

three-monthly price list for Motability vehicles addresses the latter point and will help customers choose their new cars knotving that advance payment prices will not fluctuate unex pectedly from one month to the next. In future, price lists will be published and fixed every three months. As far as the wider range of

choice IS concerned, there has been a 12% increase in the num ber of cars available at the ■under £250 advance payment”

point and 5% more choice in cars available with advance payments of under £500. There is also now a £200 cash

bonus for users who keep their car in good order. Motorists who make no loss, damage or third party claims during their hire agreement, and who maintain the car in good condition, will be eligible to receive the Good Condition Bonus. The new benefit has been

introduced following the improved fam wear and tear pol icy. which now sees around 90 % of customers passing the end of contract inspection with no problems. For many people, a Motabili

ty Scheme car means the chance to get a job, go to college or sim- p ly ^ ^ y life to the full, a free- doi^Rat many of us take for granted. Since it was set up as a registered charity in 1977, Motability has provided more than 1.5 million cars and pow ered wheelchairs. The scheme currently repre

sents 6% of all new car sales in the UK. Today, almost 400,000 dis

abled people and their families benefit from Motability. Here is how it works: Di.sabled nennie can use their

ost major car manu facturers are fully committed to giving disabled drivers a good deal on

government-funded disability allowances to lease or buy a car, powered wheelchair/scooter through one of three main schemes: • A new car on a three-year

contract hire lease. 9 A new or used car on hire

purchase, over a term of two to five years. 9 A new or used powered

wheelchair, or scooter on hire purchase, over a term of one to three years. By far the most popular

scheme is the Contract Hire Scheme, which offers disabled people a brand new car of their choice, from a wide-ranging list of approved manufacturers, on a three-year lease. All mainte nance and servicing costs are included, together with compre hensive insurance and break down assistance. To be eligible to join the

Motability Scheme, applicants must be in receipt of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance, or the War Pension ers’ Mobility Supplement, which must be awarded for at least 12 months. Children from the age of three and non-drivers can also apply for cars as pas sengers, provided they receive the correct allowance. Once a customer has chosen

which scheme they wish to join, they then agree to pay over all, or part of their allowance to Motability, depending on their choice of car/ wheelchair, for the duration of their contract hire, or hire purchase agreement. In the event that a customer’s DLA award is not renewed to cover the full length of their chosen scheme, the car must be returned to Motability but there will be around three months between the cancella tion and the return-by date to allow sufficient time for alterna tive arrangements to be made. All Motability Scheme cars

and wheelchairs/scooters are available through a national network of more than 3,500 Motability Accredited Suppli ers.

To become accredited, the

suppliers are regularly inspect ed on site to meet a set of stan dards, which are set in order to ensure that all customers receive a first class service. Motability also awards vari

ous grants to help those cus tomers who need additional financial help. For further information

about Motability and its vari ous schemes, call 0800 093 100, or visit your local accredited dealership. To locate your near est dealership, log on to the Motability website at www.mntahilitv.cn.iik
