Young Farmers Members of Bolton- by-Bo\v!and Young Farmers’ Club met in the village hall for a talk by a repre­ sentative of Rabi, which is the group’s chosen charity for 2007 and 200S.


Members were thanked for their support at the duck race held on New Year’s Day, which was attended by vil­ lagers and members of the Young Farm­ ers.


Next week’s meeting is at 7-45 p.m. in the village hall and will feature practice for the brains trust and public .speaking, as well as preparation for the fashion show.


FuncJ-raiser Bolton-by-Bowland’s children's commit­


tee held an annual fund-raiser in the village hall in December and would like to thank stallholders, visitors and helpers for making the evening such a great success.


The profit was in the region of £400. This money will be added to club funds and used to support events such as the bowling evening for older children, the annual sports day and the children's Christmas party.

Surprise party Members of Down- ham WI enjoyed their festive party in the village hall. The e n te r ta i nme n t turned out to be a surprise “This is Your Life” ceremo­ ny for member Mrs Greta Capstick, who was celebrating her 90th birthday.


Complete with iconic music, surprise guests and the famous red book, the tales and anec­ dotes of her life were recalled by family and friends, who emphasised Greta’s zest for life and enthusiasm for all she does.


A Jacob’s join supper for members and guests brought the evening to a close.

Waste paper The usual waste paper collection will take place in Grindleton today.


Contributions of newspaper and magazines can be left in the enclosure at the top of Back Lane near the chapel wall.

Sweep clean The spring cleaning day of Hurst Green Memorial Hall, originally organised for Saturday, has now been postponed until January 19th.

Rag Rugs On Saturday, January 19th, there is to be a workshop on the art

THERE was a huge turn-out of vil­ lage residents with their children and friends to the Christmas fes­ tive market held in the Parkers Arms, Newton.


The event, organised by the co-pro­ p r ie to rs of the Parkers Arms,


TaS^ie Madi and Kathy Smith, was to raise funds for Cystic Mbro-


sis. Well over £100 was raised from the various stalls selling home­


made produce, biscuits, chocolates, pickles and a wide variety of cakes including stollen and almond cake.


Other stalls selling Christmas gifts were Hidden Door, of Slaidburn, with their Rowland hand-made soaps, Mr Stuart McGregor with his range of wines and spirits and Stydd Nurseries, of Ribchester, with a wonderful display of festive decorations, all of whom donated


part of their proceeds to the wor­ thy cause.


The hightlight of the evening was the visit of Father Christmas who \yas eagerly awaited by lots of excited children who all received a gift from him.

Planning A chance for villagers to see the plans for the proposed resi­ dential development on the site of the Marbill factory in Watt Street and Whalley Road takes place on Saturday.


There will be an exhi­ bition of the plans in


St Mary's Hall, Whalley Road, from 9-30 to 11-30 a.m. when representatives from Marbill and the developers will be present. The pro­ posal will be dis­ cussed at a planning meeting of Sabden Parish Council on Tuesday in the Methodist Rooms at 7 p.m. when the public are welcome.

New crib A new crib has been greatly admired dur­ ing services at the English Martyrs’ RC Church over the Christmas period.


It all began when keen artist Glyn Roberts, a friend of Fr Philip Price, offered to paint and refurbish the crib figures. Fur­ ther discussion fol­ lowed and it was decided that a new crib was required.


“This was constructed by Fred Arkwright. We are very grateful to him and Glyn as the crib and figures should now last us

The new rotas for readers and extra­ ordinary ministers are now available at the back of the church. The Thurs­ day group resumes today at the presby­ tery at 1-30 p.m.

Fellowship This group of five churches in Barrow, Billington and Whalley works together to promote closer fellowship to help people gain greater knowledge and insight into the problems facing soci­ ety and how best to deal with them. There is no member­ ship list or subscrip­ tion and new people

Next Thursday,the group meets at Billington Baptist Church a t 8 p.m. when Cal McKenna, of the Children’s Society, will speak about working with asylum seekers.
