Top climber will be

club's guest

EXPERIENCED Himalayan mountaineer Tom Richardson will speak to local enthusiasts next Thursday. A features writer for “Climb

Magazine”, Mr Richardson will present another slide show to Clitheroe Mountaineering Club. He has fitted more expeditions

to the Himalayas in the last 10 years than most would be able to achieve in a lifetime and has written extensively on the train ing and equipment needed for modern, high altitude moun taineering. His talk will focus on The

Karakoram Mountains, a com plex range that form the north west extension of the Greater Himalaya. Within the range there are five of the 14 8,000m peaks in the world.

AN introductory course on Buddhism and Meditation starts at Blackburn Buddhist Centre today. The 10-week course, split

“Karakoram Dreaming,” is based around five expeditions to that region spanning some 20 years, including exploratory trekking and making first ascents, to leading a commercial group to Gasherbrum 2, one of the 8,000m peaks. Interwoven with the stories he

identifies the sources, both his torical and contemporary, that

have inspired him to keep returning to these great moun tains. It is also, at another level, a

continuous journey of personal development, fascination and even obsession. The talk will take place at

Clitheroe Cricket Club, Chat- burn Road, 7-45 for 8 p.m. Con tributions of £4 on the door will be most appreciated, (s)

Thumbs up to

Santa Services Despite poor weather on

the first Saturday of the Santa Services, they once again proved to be a huge success. Over the two Saturdays,

hundreds of passengers, many families with young children, travelled into Clitheroe on the trains car rying Santa. They were met at the station by a group of comical cartoon characters giving out sweets to the chil dren and leading them into Clitheroe. Thanks to the support of

the Chamber of Trade and the market traders a wide range of entertainment and a variety of festive products were on sale, providing a wonderful shopping experi ence in Clitheroe. Ribble Valley Rail would

like to thank their main sponsors, Northern Rail, Booths, Byrnes, Dawson’s and Abbey Biscuits, with out whose continuing sup port they would not be able to provide this wonderful Christmas Service. Santa will certainly be

back again during Christ mas 2008, so look out for details later in the year.
