Bridling Ion Town . . .4 Clilheroe .........................0 CLITHEROE were humiliated by manager less Bridlington Town on Saturday, as the east coast stragglers inflicted the Blues' heaviest defeat of the season to leapfrog them in the league. Failure to defend set
pieces yet again cost the Shawbridge side for the firs t two second half goals, before the backline completely fell apart for Bridlington to waltz through and net twice more. I t was desperate stuff
against a side very much in transition, a side that hadn't won since Novem ber and sacked its man ager just four days earli er.
The Queensgate team
had by far the most chances in the first half too, compared to a Jason Jones effort Clitheroe mustered on target. They successfully
found players in the box, should have seen tricky winger Alex Rhodes net from a left wing cross and had a Neil Grayston free kick tipped over the bar.
B Paul Horridge But for Paul Horridge
in the Clitheroe goal, the score would have been far worse as he stopped sev eral certain goals in the second half as Bridling ton poured through the Blues defence after an injured Ian Flannery hobbled from the field. However, 10 minutes
after the break, a right wing free kick given away by Russ Clarke produced
- ^
the opener when Wayne H a r ra t t had the ball knocked down to him to volley home at the back post. Then from a right-
wing corner, Bridlington made i t 2-0 when Hor ridge had done well with a double save to see the ball out of play, only for Clitheroe to gift Graham Wallace a free header at the back post from the set piece. Both Sam Heap and
Will Exton had been introduced by this point to push the Blues for ward, but neither made much of an impact on the game as penetrating moves and defence-split- ting passes were sparse. Exton saw a shot fly
over the bar, but it was new centre half Chris Middleton from Staly- bridge Celtic who came th e closest to scoring when his effort from a Gary Stopforth free kick s truck the foot of the post. I t didn't get any better
than th a t as it was all Clitheroe could do to get the ball in midfield, even with the introduction of Neil Reynolds. Any c re a t ivi ty was lost, so much so that left
back Clarke made the most influential moves into Bridlington's box, but to no avail. Bridlington broke
away and drew everyone over to one side of Clitheroe's 18-yard box on 85 minutes, leaving Rhodes completely unmarked in the centre of the area to score the easi est of goals, despite Hor ridge getting a hand to it. And a fourth and final
strike came courtesy of Tom Greaves when Bridlington ripped through the backline to complete their biggest win of the season. As a result, the east
coast side now sit fourth bottom in the table, a point b e tte r off than Clitheroe, who have been pulled into the final three and now reside just five points above Radcliffe Borough and the relega tion spot.

Stonyhurst' pair help Exiles to victory
By Adrian Capstick
TWO Stonyhurst pupils helped the Irish Exiles Under 19s rugby team to a 38-0 victory against The Independent Schools Bar barians at Harrow School on Sunday. Phil Leonard, of
Hothersall, Longridge, and Patrick Clancy, from Berk shire, are sixth formers at Stonyhurst who have both represented Lancashire at rugby. Phil was selected to play
outside centre for the full duration of the game, and scored the Exiles’ second try.
Patrick came on as a
second half substitute and played flanker.

Alizo ....................................2 Wolves Under I 6 s ...........2 CLITHEROE came away from a blustery Pleckgate with a well-earned point. Kris Holden kept the
locals in the game in the first half with three top class saves, before referee’s man-of-the-match Jack Parkinson went close with a bullet header, and Tom Grimes saw his follow up cleared from the line. Matt Riley had a head
er shave the post from a good set-piece from Ryan Duplessis, and Chris Cot- tam forced a good save before half-time. Early in the second half, man-of- the-match Grimes jinked his way into the box and coolly slotted home. Akzo equalised midway through the half before
substitute Doug Grimes made the most of a defen sive blunder to make it 2-1 with his first goal of the season. Akzo equalised again,
however, after some good play down the right. And Holden was again
the Wolves’ saviour as he clawed away a shot from the top corner, before one last cbance fell to Cottam after Grimes had made a great run down the left, only for Akzo to clear. Accringlon Stanley . . .3 Wolves Under 1 5 s ...........1 AFTER a lay-off of near ly two months, the Under 15s turned in one of their best performances of the season. With real commitment,
the town side held top of the league Accrington until the final five minutes. Excellent performances were seen from many of
6
the team, and they deserved to go in at the interval with a one-goal lead, courtesy of a penalty won and converted by Max Harrison. And even though the
opposition quickly equalised at the start of the second half, the Wolves continued to play good football, defending well and also making more scoring opportunities. Superior fitness told in
the end, but the players should be proud of their efforts. Langlio Maroon.............0 Wolves Under 8 s .............I CLITHEROE Wolves returned to league action for the first time in six weeks with a win at Oakhill College. On a difficult surface,
the young Wolves found it hard to break down a very determined Langho

defence, but as the game changed, goals arrived. With five minutes
remaining of the first peri od, Elliot Watson cut inside his marker and laid the ball off for Owen Jack- son to rifle home a fantas tic shot from 10 yards. The second half saw
Wolves make a number of substitutions, which were rewarded when Jackson added his second with a powerful strike, before James Billington found space and time to calmly place the ball beyond the keeper. An unfortunate own-goal completed the scoring.
LANGHO Juniors Under 14s started the New Year as they had finished 2007, continuing their unbeaten run with an 8-0 win over Mellon There were hat-
tricks for Conor Bunting and Rick McGurty, before Josh Walmsley and Luke Jarrold completed the scoring. Man-of-the-match was Alex Clarke.

Richard stars for Clitheroe
COMING hard on the heels of the turkey and pud, a long, hard battle ensued when Clitheroe A entertained St Andrew’s B in the Mid-Lancs Bad minton League Second Division. Christine Smitten and
Mary Brass set the tally running with a spirited Mn in the ladies’ doubles, but the star of the show was Richard Llewelyn, winning five of his six games. He p artnered Pete
Woods and Graham Morris in the men’s dou bles and Mary Brass in the muted. Morris joined Smitten
in the mixed to add two solid wins, with Woods partnering Louise Burrill to bring the match to a creditable draw. I t was a good result
against promotion con tenders, but frustrating as time co n strain ts meant the locals conced ed a crucial game.
