runs HUGH Graham h i t the winning ru n s in the las t over as Clitheroe Under 13s A beat their B team in the opening fixture of the Ribble Valley Indoor Cricket League. The B team batted
first, but tight bowling from George Drake and Graham limited the scoring early in the innings. However, some great
batting from the last pair of Robert Gibb and Dan Fitzgerald saw their score move on to 28 runs. The A team made a
steady s ta r t through Andy Ramsden and Drake, followed by some big hitting from Jack Kay, and i t looked like they would romp home with overs to spare. But- Gibb and Saud
Ahmed pegged them back, and the scores were tied a t the start of the last over, only for Graham to defend his wicket and score the winning runs. The B team’s next
fixture was agains t fancied Longridge A. Josh Dean and Sam
p art icular
Bristol got them off to a good start, Ahmed and Thomas Baker kept the scoreboard ticking over and, again, the final pair of Gibb and Fitzgerald upped the run rate to see the side put 34 runs on the board. T ig h t bowling, in from
Ahmed, kept the Lon gridge run rate down, but it all came down to the las t ball of the innings with the scores tied.
The Longridge bats
men went for a quick single, but fine fielding from Dean and Fitzgerald resulted in a run out and the game to Clitheroe B.
Clitheroe blasted for
By Adrian Capstick
NEIL Reynolds has attacked his side’s desire to play for Clitheroe Football Club, citing a lack of pas sion in Saturday’s humbling 4-0 defeat at Bridlington Town. And he feels there is a need for
more experienced, dogged players to “fight in the trenches”. The Blues player-manager has
rubbished talk of relegation, and gone on the offensive to fire up his side, upping his search for a natural born leader and promising five fresh players for Saturday’s difficult trip to in-form Ossett Albion. Craig Sargeson, John Osborne,
Barry Shuttleworth and 18-year-old Euxton winger Matt Atherton, who has Welsh Premier League experi ence, will be among that number, as Reynolds won’t suffer players that don’t give their all. He said: “I take full responsibility
for players’ performances, I signed them, I picked the team, but the top and bottom line is they’re not good enough and are living on past repu tations. Pulling on that shirt doesn’t mean enough to them. “I’ve never confessed to being the
best player in the world, but passion and drive are my main two attrib utes, and if you haven’t got that pas sion and fire in your belly, then you are no good to anybody.
“I’ve realised that now, and we’ve
got time to put it right, bring in a few new faces and move forward.” He added: “Knowing how to kill a
game off is essential, and it is that experience I’m after. I’ve heard peo ple say that there is no captain’s voice on the pitch, and they’re prob ably right. “We’ve got to find a natural
leader, someone who will take the game by the scruff of the neck, as I can’t play forever. “We’ve not got pots of money, but
we’re not crying poverty either, money is available for new players, it’s just attracting them to the club at this time of year. “I ’ve talked to 20 players this
week, Pete (Smith), the chairman and I are working tirelessly to get some fresh blood in, but I’ve got to move heaven and earth for a player to come to Clitheroe over the set up and facilities at clubs like Bamber Bridge. “They’ve p t to want to play, dig
deep and give it their all in the trenches.
“We can’t replace Joel Byrom, and
I don’t want to replace him. Joel was a one off, and it’s unfair on the lads that we bring in to the squad to be compared to him. “I’ve not replaced Joel with Jason
Jones, Jason has rejoined us to strengthen the squad.” Ossett are riding high in the play-

THE latest of professional Jamie Hunt's series of winter competitions was held in monsoon conditions a t Whalley Golf Club. Not surprisingly, there was only a

offs on the back of a five-game win ning streak, including a 4-1 win over league leaders Curzon Ashton. Clitheroe knocked the South York
shire side out of the FA Trophy earli er in the season, but now face them twice in the league in as many weeks. “This time last season we were in
a much worse position, with less points having played more games, so i t ’s not doom and gloom,” said Reynolds. “We’ve got a lot of young lads, but
no doggedness and experience in the side.
“Doggedness is the key as we face
a difficult second half to the season. ‘Talk of going down and panic
stations at this stage is ridiculous. The fans have been fantastic, and if they can continue to get behind us we will turn this around.”

put in plenty of effort - if not their best footballing display. Both teams were evenly matched,
and although Wolves had a hatful of corners, a draw was probably a fair result, and some fine saves from Paul McGrath kept them in the game. “ More junior football on page 70.
Syndicate take racing * to new level
By Adrian Capstick
A GROUP of Whalley horse racing enthusiasts have taken their interest in the sport of kings to another level by forming a S3Tidicate. Named Royal Whalley
Racing, the 11 members have just purchased their first horse - a bay filly named Freedom Flying- and are looking for a 12th individual to join the group. Trained by Joss Saville
a t his Gisburn stables, the four-year-old is the offspring of a Queen Anne Stakes winner at Royal Ascot, and won the first race of her short career by landing the Selling Hurdle at Sedge- field in October. Spokesman for the syn
dicate, Richard Palmer, is looking for individuals inte re s ted in getting involved, with a view to perhaps starting a second syndicate. He said: "A group of us
decided to get involved- on a purely social basis, with the aim of having some good fun without too much financial com mitment. “We all like going rac
ing and felt this was the next step forward. “The horse will be
trained locally by Joss, which will allow mem bers to make regular sta ble visits to watch the horse work.
“Joss is a very promis
ing up and coming train er who comes with glow ing recommendations from numerous senior bodies within the National Hunt game. “We hope we can grow
alongside him and entice more members with the hope of generating enough interest to pur chase another horse.” Palmer added: “Costs
are nowhere near that of doing it by yourself, and we aim to run the syndi cates as a fun-based social thin g with the hope of a little bit of suc cess along the way.” The group have one
share remaining in Free dom Flying and anyone interested should contact either Richard i 07947 045942), fellow member Stephen Brown (07909 565752), or attend the syndicate’s next meeting at Whalley Conservative Club on Wednesday. Jan uary 23rd, at 8
