Jooked is the automatic gearbox. Ki'he difference between a bog stan- *&ard slush-box and the smartest intelligent automatics is enormous. The Q-Tronic system fitted to this Alfa Romeo 159 JTD diesel is part of the MENSA set. The 159 JTD diesels you proba­


bly already know about. Short ver­ sion? There is a 150 b.h.p. 1.9-litre Multijet JTD unit, while the range­ topping oil-burner is the 2.4-litre 200 b.h.p. Multijet JTD. Both are standout performers.


What we are interested in here is the bit that marshals that power, the clever Q-Tronic gearbox. This allows the car to be driven in automatic mode with all the functions typical of an automatic transmission (park­ ing, reverse, neutral and drive) or in sequential mode by simply moving the gear selector. The only gripe is that in order to


change up you push the gear lever fonvards. It should instead be pulled back to match the car’s momentum and vice versa when braking, tap­ ping the lever forward to change down. So it is not perfect.

Sport/Winter function that allows the driver to choose between two operating modes (Sport and Win­ ter) in addition to the default Com­ fort setting. In Sport mode, the gear shifts are


set at higher engine speeds for a more sporty performance. Winter mode ensures maximum grip when the road surface is hazardous. The Q-Tronic gearbox tacks


another £1,450 onto the cost of an Alfa 159 J'TD and, in all, there are four models to choose from. Both Turismo and Lusso models are offered in both the saloon and Sport- wagon body styles. Lusso trim gets you extras like leather, rain-sensing


wipers, automatic headlamps, rear parking sensors and 17in. alloy wheels. Compared to typical Teu­ tonic rivals, the specification list on both cars is relatively generous. The delightful thing about the


Alfa Romeo JTD Q-Tronic is that it does not make you work too hard. Although it is the automotive equiv­ alent of a prom queen, there is very little th a t is high maintenance about it. The driver aids are easy to figure out, the controls intuitive and the gearbox seems to work in con­ cert with, rather than in opposition to, you. At first it seems like a dream date. There are some caveats. Running


costs are on a par with more expen­ sive German rivals and the gearbox does dull the edge of the perform­ ance and economy figures of these excellent Multijet diesels. That is a small grumble given its versatility and sheer ease of use.
