Colne and Nelson . . . .14 Clilheroe ............... \
. . .12
THE home side kicked off into the wind, and after a fine take, Clitheroe started confidently, setting up ruck and maul efficiently and effectively. . This took them upfield, as they exerted the kind of pressure that has been required in training. A kickable penalty with
in the first five minutes went just wide from full back Lafranceschina, as
■ Clitheroe showed their mettle. Using the elements to
their advantage, Clitheroe once again pegged their hosts back deep into their own half, and with forceful breaks from centres Bartle and Callaghan, they looked menacing. The first points came on
15 • minutes when Callaghan took a quick ball and produced a mes meric run to score under the sticks; Lafranceschina convert
ed to make the scoreline 7- 0 to the visitors. With the weather wors
ening, sloppy organisation and defending gave the All Blacks the initiative, and they powered down the field, scoring through their, backs in the right hand corner. Worse was to happen
shortly afterwards, when the injury curse struck hard. • First, fly half Dave Watson, was cut down by •
Clitheroe’s narrow defeat
a nasty-looking injury to his calf.
Although the plan to
run off Callaghan was a sound one, Clitheroe some how lost their way, and were under the cosh.' Two penalties were gift
ed to Colne and Nelson in a short space of time, one for coming round and the other for handling in the ruck. Clitheroe trailed 11-7
and the game was ebbing away from them. However, the Maroons
. were not done, and a series of great runs from Garins and the Clitheroe backs got them into the opposi tion 22. Good set ball gave the
platform for the ball to be flung wide to the right, and Curphey plunged over for an unconverted try to give Clitheroe the lead at 12-
11. A second fly half was to
suffer an injury, this one more serious when Callaghan had a clash of heads, coming away with a nasty three-inch gash, forcing him to leave the field immediately.- Second row Wilkinson
was next one,out after a knee to the side of the head. Clitheroe were in dire
straits, and could o n ly watch as their hosts forced themselves down field and towards the posts. - A series of drives even
tually took their toll, and a ■ penalty was conceded only
10 yards out. 'The.full back, who had
kicked well all game,- slot ted the penalty to make it 14-12. Clitheroe now lie eighth
in the league, but will undoubtedly regroup and will be looking forward to meeting old foes Blackpool away on Saturday. Clilheroe Cavaliers. . .17 Garslang Lions ............. 3 THE second string ground out their third wrin on the trot, to move up to second place in the Miller Homes Eive North table. With relatively decent
conditions to start with, Clitheroe made their extra weight in the tight scrum mages tell and the line-out was also a profitable area for the Littlemoor side. Unfortunately, an injury
crisis at fly-half left the home side with no recog nised player for the posi tion. Brian Wood stepped up
to the plate and made a decent enough fist of it but • the lack of kicking expert ise was a handicap, but for bravery, he definitely earned his after-match beerl All the points in the
match came in the first half which was hardly sur prising after the heavens opened just after the break and the game became a complete lottery. Clitheroe scored three
tries to just a solita ry penalty for the visitors. ' The-first came when
controlled play at the base of a ruck set up lock-for ward Martin Yeoman to plunge over. Clitheroe were soon
camped again on the Garstang line. • A strong, scrum was
other ideas, and awarded a penalty try, as the defence was caught interfering off side. Simon .Gretton slot ted the extras to put- Clitheroe well and truly in the box seat. The next try was the
powered over the line and scrum-half Graeme Tin dall claimed the touch down. But . the-referee had
best of the day. Clitheroe again attacked
up the left and dragged the defence in at the break-' down. Spotting an unguarded blind side, Slinger scooted in, cutting inside the cover defenders for a fine try. Garstang came back
strongly as they shored up their creaking scrum with a young giant and pound-
. ed away at the Clitheroe line.
, Some stout defence kept them at bay and even held up over the line on a couple of occasions, before the half-time whistle. - The second half was one
to forget and although both sides had a few half chances it was never going to be more than that. • On Saturday,-Thornton '
Cleveleys are the visitors (kick-off3p.m.).' -
