Part of Pendle Leisure Trust THE Kings Cross Hot Club during the gig at the Swan and Royal, Clilhcroc (s)
'THE Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Club started its autumn season at the Swan and Royal, in Clitheroe, with the return of one of last year’s, favourites. The Kings Cross Hot Club
is infused with the spirit of Django Reinhardt. Django was probably the
greatest non-American musi cian to influence the course of jazz development. Listening to the music he
laid down in the 1930s apd 1940s, one is struck by the sheer originality and daring of his solos- he had genius. The other great thing he did was to bring a whole new
audience to jazz, and this is what the- Kings Cross Hot Club are doing by blending the Django gipsy influence, Parisian cabaret and the American soingbook tradition. They gave us a hugely var
ied programme of music rang ing from hard driving swing to reflective instrumental pieces and a wide variety of, vocal numbers by Dutch singer Katja Prudinsky. We had great solos from
Phil Grispo on lead guitar and Caleb Fawcett on piano - par ticularly good on numbers like “Sweet Sue” - and Katja gave us fine version of “That Old Black Magic”. • A great night’s music with a large and enthusiastic audi- ,
ence ensured that we are well bedded in at The Swan and Royal. The club is starting a. series of mid-monthly gigs featuring local bands, the first of which will be the Ben Allen Quartet, including Gary Boyle on guitar and Freddy Gamer oii piano, on Novem ber 17th. Tickets to these gigs will be reduced to £5. The Club’s main base is
now the Swan arid Royal Hotel, in Castle Street, with sessions starting at 8 p.m., but there will be occasional changes in venue so please keep an eye on these columns or watch out for posters, or visit the club’s website:
