Clitherpe Health Centre provides a valuable service for thousands of Ribble Valley residents, particu larly elderly people living in outlying villages such as Chatburn, Grindleton, B o l to n -b y -B ow la n d , Downham and Gisbum. However, new Govern

the Government’s White Paper about the role of community pharmacies, but fear that proposals to prevent doctors in many rural areas from dispens ing medicines will have a huge effect on local health services. “We do not want to lose

any of our staff here at Clitheroe Health Centre, as we think that they do a fantastic job. Neither do we wish to stop any of the

services provided.” Mr Mileham explained

th a t the surgery.had recently launched a free scheme, by wWch prescrip tions were delivered to the doorstep of elderly patients who are unable to

travel to a chemist. “We want to make sure

that local people continue to enjoy reasonable access to health services, and for our. dispensing patients to

continue to have a choice of obtaining their medicines from the dispensary,” he

said. Letters are being sent

out to patients of both the Castle Medical Group and Pendleside Medical Prac tice explaining the conse quences of th e . plan. Patients have until November 20th to voice concerns.

- Dr Nigel McMeekin, a

partner at the Pendleside Medical Practice, said: “We really need the sup port of local people to keep - our dispensary open. Each letter of support will help.”. Our picture shows (from

the left) Mr Mileham, Charlotte Yates, Denise Fawcett, Dr McMeekin and Krista Stewart who have launched a campaign to save the dispensary from: being scrapped. . (B021008/1)
