STAFF and pupils at Grintileton CE Primary School have been all smiles after receiving a glowing Ofsted report. An inspector visited the rural

school and gave it top marks for the quality of provision, praising the varied and motivating teach ing programme and .the . range of extra-curricular activities. Special mention was given to

the outstanding achievements of the children, the pastpral care the school provides and the strong links with the local com munity and church. Our picture shows staff and

youngsters giving the Ofsted report the thumbs up. (s)

experts from Silverwoods know the picture, which depicts long range views down the valley and came to the auction from a house in Chat- bum, has been painted using oil on board. Valuer Nicky Brierley said: “This

painting has a naive feel to it and I ' am sure there will be a lot of local interest in it. It needs to be cleaned, but it can be restored.” . Among the other items of fine art,

silver and jewellery which will fea ture in Silverwoods’ ruby anniver sary sale will be a lithograph signed twice by French artist Toulouse Lautrec. I t is expected to sell for around £1,500. 0 Next Thursday’s special sale is

antiques auction in Clitheroe in 1968, whichwas under the direction of Chris Silverwood. His father, Tom, was auctioneer at Clitheroe Auction Mart before and after the Second World War and Chris worked as his clerk. The first antiques and furniture

had already been organised before he died and his wife decided it should still take place, but that it would be her first and last sale. However she was persuaded by

taking place four decades after Sil- verwood.s’ 'f irs t furniture and

sale followed an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in October, 1967. It proved to be such a success that Chris continued to hold sales each year until his death in 1992. The usual Spring sale of that year .

one of her regular customers to con tinue with the sales which she did for the next nine years. Just as Mary finally decided to

retire, at the end of 2000, the Auc tion Mart completed work on its purpose-built auction rooms and the directors acquired the well-respected Silverwoods’ name.

A CLITHEROE woman was confronted by her ex-partner sit ting on her doorstep when she arrived home at 10-30 p.m. Blackburn magistrates heard

that Diane Marr wound down her window and told David Atherton to go away and his response was to spit into her car. Atherton (42), of Bawdlands,

Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order. He was made subject to community supervision for two years with a condition that he completes the domestic violence programme. He was -also ordered to .pay £60 towards prosecution costs. ■ Miss Catherine Allan (prose

cuting) said that after the rela tionship ended, Atherton kept on harassing Miss Marr. The police became involved and, eventually, there was a conviction and a restraining order. She said that during the incident Atherton walked off without saying a word after spitting into the car. Mr Roger Pickles (defending)

said that Atherton.was an emo tionally immature person who was not coping well with the breakdown of the relationship,

•which continued after the restraining order had been made before breakiiig down again. “He says she. has been going

out with other men and then telling him about it,” said Mr Pickles. “His reaction has been totally

inappropriate, but he now says he doesn’t want the relationship to continue, he has had enough.”

Mountaineers’ day of climbing at Langdale

TWELVE members of Clitheroe Mountaineering Club took part in the day meet to L^gdale. One group set off from the car

park at Old Dungeon Ghyll, to climb Mill Gill to Stickle Tarn, from where they scrambled up the slanting terrace of Jack’s Rake, crossing the face of Pavey Ark, to the mountain’s summit. Members enjoyed excellent views of the tarn below and the surrounding panora-

ma. Leaving Pavey Ark, the party > '

descended south-west for a scramble up the next objective .Harrison Stickle, then continued over the peaks of Loft Crag and Pike of

iK-t/

Stickle to Stake Pass for the descent •via Langdale Comb into Mickleden, and refreshment at the Old Dun geon Ghyll Hotel. • Another party walked to Cam

bridge crags beneath the summit of Bowfell to tackle the classic rock climb, Bowfell Buttress. Despite the difficulties of the route being signifi cantly increased due to water seep age after a long period of rain, the' pair was successful in completing the route.- - The club’s previous day meet took

members to Swindale, near Shap, with the rain and mist requiring members to make use of their navi gation skills.

Using a route compiled by chair

man, Brian Davies, each person in turn, pnavigated in stages round a circular from Swindale Head. The first objective was the bothy,.

Mosedale Cottage, followed by the summits of Branstree and Selside, with locating the cairns of Artie Crag, being added to provide further challenge. After descending Selside End, the Old Corpse Road was located for the return to Swindale Head. At the club’s next indoor meeting

at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Clitheroe Cricket Club, Judith Robinson, Godfrey Metcalfe and Nick Mill- ward, will give an illustrated talk

about their Land’s End to John O’Croats bike ride. The -winter programme of indoor

climbing wall sessions starts today. Anyone interested in taking part should meet at the council offices car park at 5.15 p.ni. Further details may be obtained from Bern Hard man by calling 01254 824856. ’ The next outdoor ^tivities will be

a walk in Bowland on Sunday, Octo ber 19th, leaving the council offices car park at 8 a.m., and a weekend hut meet at High Moss in the Dud- don Valley from Friday,'October 31st to Sunday November 2nd. Fur ther details can be obtained by call ing Valerie Grooby on 01200 428766.
