Village residents on guard over suspicious man

POLICE are urging resi dents to be on their guard after a suspicious man was seen lurking in Billington. ■ The warning has been

issued by Bolice Communi ty Support Officer (PCSO) Jane Pearson after reports

of a man, around 50 years of age, peering'into people’s garages. I t is understood that the

same man then asked an elderly resident if he could go into her house to use her phone to call a friend. How

Make sure your ladders are safe

DON’T put your trust in a rickety old ladder - it could cost you your life. That is the message from Ribble

Valley Borough Council, which has joined forces with the Health and Safety Executive and Daw son’s Departnient Store,. in Clitheroe, for an initiative aimed at removing dangerous ladders from the workplace. Over the autumn months small

businesses in Ribble Valley can get their ladders checked and, if nec essary, trade them in for new ones at up to half the price as part of an initiative called “Ladder Exchange”. The council’s environmental

health officer, Julie Whitwell, said: “Many accidents are caused by people using the wrong or broken ladders and the need to maintain high standards for workplace

equipment cannot be emphasised enough. “Ladder Exchange gives small

businesses the opportunity to assess the risks involved in ladder use and, if necessary, replace their ladders at a discount. “We want anyone working at

height to use the right ladders for the job.”

. Seven workers died and a fur ther 1,000 were injured in the UK last year as a result of a fall from height in the workplace. Gary Massey, shop floor manager at Dawson’s Department Store, said: “We are delighted to support any initiative aimed at making the workplace safer.” Ribble Valley Borough Coun

cil’s environmental health team will be undertaking random inspections over the next 12 weeks to ensure work at height is being

carried out safely and ladders are | in a safe condition. “If necessary, we will seize and destroy, unsafe

ladders and prosecute anyme who is putting the lives of their workers at risk,” added Julie. • To ensure your ladder is up to

scratch, check for the following: Bent, broken or missing ruh^, rot or rust, loose rivets, split or bent stiles, paint or chemical splashes, missing or damaged feet and/or extension bars. Commercial grade ladders,

podiums and work platforms are available at discounts of up to

-50% a t Dawson’s Department Store in King Street, Clitheroe. Take your old ladders to the Level B reception at the Council Offices in Church Walk, Clitheroe, and ask for a member of the environ mental health team, who will exchange them for a voucher. ■
