14 Clitheroe Advertiser&Times, Thursday, December 4th, 2008 . A few thoughts
about the market I COULD say a lot about the mar-, ket,’but would be here all night; ■ ■
- First, they should have left the market’where it was.and put a cov-; ered area over it using the walls that are already there;
. ■: . r , vSecond, put the parking where the
market is now instead of., th a t pathetic building. : Third; you go up Moor Lane,
P-;I- |i&‘ i
.• down Parson-Lane to Station Road then turn right on to the car park, when coming out you turn right or left to Bawdlands then either up
, King Street or go past the bus sta- . . tion out^of town. . ; F o u rth , make Castle S treet a pedestrian walkway to King Lane and Kjng Street. i
F ifth , in Station Road for the-
pedestrians put an up-and-over walkway for everybody then they . are not stopping the flow of traffic and put barriers all the way down so nobody can cross. ; Sixth, Moor Lane - p ut barriers
up on the left or bollards all the way from top to bottom to stop parking. ; And that is only the start. Instead •
of all the so-called do-gooders and council staff from, out of town, get someone local. - ' .
' I always go out of town to either:
. Otley, Ilkley, Skipton or Harrogate ■ to do my shopping. This town is and always will be pathetic while we have. ■ this lot in charge. Get rid as soon as • possible.
IAN COOPER, Edisford Road, Clitheroe
Clitheroe needs
something to offer WITH reference to your front page ■ article about national stores coming into Clitheroe. I wholeheartedly agree as I have stated in your letters,
I section in the past.. ' We can only benefit from this. Clitheroe is a town suffering. I t

- needs to offer something for local people. Why are we spending our hard
earned money elsevvhere? Because Clitheroe does not provide the shops for the necessities th a t we need at a reasonable price. Clothes are expensive and choice
is few, especially for a man, shoes are the same. I don’t want to go out of town,
but I have no choice. Christmas is coming and we need to buy.our presents. Where, apart from Wool- worths, can you buy th e la te s t games console? , We pay top prices because i t ’s
Clitheroe. You only heed to com pare the petrol prices. I t must be possible to allow these: • companies into our town centre to
' nestle in ■with our lovely local shops.^ Skipton does this with great'sue-^ cess. I t is always busy and bustling.- Is th is not what we want for Clitheroe? ; As for pedestrianisationv yes

please. I t is awful walking through^ th e town centre and even worse dri-ving through.
- '
? Cars are already double parked in ; Castle Street because;people park-
: . th e ir cars outside Cowman’s and A: Boots. People”are'trying to cross the road through parked cars.""'
;: ;;:lJParking may. not. be an issue if we v.-could oKer'a park'and:ride service, ■
•' perhaps from the old Barker’sNurs- .■ery'on-Whalley Road, or from th e ; ,„,l|ink 59site.'
This, thought fills
me with horror! ■"GOULD town attract big name stores?"
'■ v I was horrified to read your
leader of November 27th; 2008. " - Do we want Clitheroe to become
like hundreds of other towns, with pedestrian precincts filled with the same array of shops? I think not. . The charm of Clitheroe is that it
is not like anywhere else and, superficially a t least, the town cen tre has changed little in 100 years. The attached picture of King
Street, dating from about 1905, is instantly recognisable. Will it still be,recognisable in another 100 ■ years? Not if we fill it with "Big Name Stores." ■ •
TONY GOODBODY, Hawthorns, Wuddington Road, Clitheroe
So, le t’s see some sense before
: Clitheroe dies completely. We must serve-the local people as well as
; looking after the tourist. We are proud folk in Clitheroe, so give us a town to be proud of.
CHRIS JACKSON, Littlcmoor Road, ■ Clitheroe
....... In my opinion -
Bah, humbug! THE genius consultants.on the
■ “Local Development Framework’’ conclude th a t a proportion of the available spend in Clitheroe is spent;
• locally in the town centre and the, rest in out of town locations and- elsewhere.
• ■ ■ •
• Br illiant.; I t : would be more’ encouraging for them to “twig”, the fact th a t shoppers would not be driven away .if more reasonable, parking existed. By amazing deduc--
' tion, folks from other places may^ also want to ■visit our lovely town. A fool could identify at least 50 extra' street parking places in Clitheroe
, town centre with revision of yellow - lines and street furniture inserts., Could we not also have democra cy and support from councillors so
■ that disastrous pedestriahisatiori or silly:schemes such as'changing: ::Moor Lane are not implemented-
. unless majority, voted for, by the rel-' ■ evant residents and businesses,- ■vvhich certainly is not the' current analysis? : If the co n su lta n ts have their
; plans introduced, in conjunction • with shop rents remaining unrealis-: tic, , then there is little likelihood of
.■ a “congestion charge’’ ever being ■ necessary
in.Clitheroe, b u t then
• perhaps the councillors would vote : i for a levy to be introduced for even : ' entering the Ribble Valleyl. ■

Calderstones Park, so far as I am - aware, had nothing to do with its pi;iginal. develppment, but merely

:_at least the facade of the Clitheroe ■ Hospital, blit also we should save our snowdropslwhich are such a pleasure every spring. I live in Chatburn Road and wait
to.see them in time

There must be a sjnnpathetic way to develop ;the hospital grounds
'without ruining' its approach. The • building would make lovely flats, and the trees, drive and grounds, including th e snowdrops, would
