A CUTTING edge feature at the his toric Great Yorkshire Showground is being completed by a Gisbum man. • ■ Mr Harold Lund (pictured) is busy

working on a £5.1m. dry stone walling project as part of the latest phase of a Regional Agricultural Centre. • . The l40sq.m.of walling forms part of the'south and west sides of the building.

::' Miss Heather Parry, the - Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s'deputy chief executive, said: “The ethos behind the project is to be the centre of agriculture, in the North of England and provide a showcase environmentally friendly building, not only for our offices, but for

other not for profit agricultural organi

sations. “Our history goes back more than

150-years, so including, dry stpne walling,' which is such an important part of the Northern landscape, could not be more appropriate. . The walling has been organised by the construction contractors. House man and Falshaw of Copgrove, near Harrogate. ' Approximately 100 tonnes of :

reclaimed sandstone and grit stone have been used and this has been sourced from demolished buildings from the county, (s)

Good heavens! Church worship goes hi-tech

ATTENDAN CES are on the up a t a C l ith e r o e church, which is finding new technolo gy is the answer to its prayers., PowerPoint and DVD clips are

now all part of the regular Sun day service at Trinity Methodist Church in Parson Lane, Clitheroe', where a large screen has been installed at/the back of the altar along with a pix)jector. The Rev. Tim Thorpe said:

“We use the technology to put hymns on the screen during serv ices and i t ’s a move.which has improved the singing no end, not least because people no longer have to look down at a hymn book; they can look up so the vol ume is increased by about 30 per .

‘Cent! “We also display images up

that are appropriate to the words that are said during the service. When I have a sermon on a par ticular theme,- we can display- images that relate to it. ■ ■ '.“When I write my sermon I

use Powerpoint,‘so that during a Sunday service certain key lines , can.be highlighted!.We have a.; team of skilled.operators who'* work the system at the back of the church whileT^ve sermons and take the services as normal' during worship.” : * -

' ■ ' The system was installed by.

■ North West-based IT specialists Think4, who are more used to

. handling requests from business users.

: - Church member Dennis Ogden is part of the team who help put together the services once the details have been emailed by the

.• preacher.^.'They .operate the i, equipment during Sunday servic es..He says:.“Most people are ; very happy with the system. I’m ■ slowly learning how to put it

' together but there are other , members'of the team who are

much more capable than me.” Mr Thorpe says the vast

majority of church members have embraced the new technol ogy. ■ “There have been no real voic

es of disquiet since it was intro-’ duced. The screen helps people who perhaps have hearing issues - they can follow the sermon through bullet points and we have also got the visuals to back, up the words as well. ■ - . “In the future, we are looking at putting clips from films in.

especially when we are talking to

■ children, so that we can make a point. Visitors to the church are

’sometimes amazed at how advanced we'are. “It is an important tool for us,

but not our only tool. The tech nology is a means to an end. We haven’t let it get in the way of

■ what we are really here for, wor ship. I suppose there is a danger that people can get carried away and go overboard with special effects, but I feel it is important when you are trying to get a mes-

' sage across to* try and use all the senses. “In the past it has tended to be

verbal and now it is verbal and ■visual. For example, we can link today’s world into the Bible, for example, we can show clips that illustrate some of the meanings of the passages from the Bible, which is the sort of thing Jesus used to do. ■

; “Another plus point is that it can be a major sa'ving in hymn

■ books. Providing full service books and hymn books for a con gregation of over 100, like ours, can run into the thousands; a CD

• copy of which can cost less than £ 100.”

- .

• Pictured is Mr. Ogden with some of the equipment used, (s)

CHRISTMAS in the Ribble Val ley ju s t wouldn’t be th e same without Santa making his annual sleigh-ride tour of the area in the ‘ weeks leading up to the big day. Organised by Clitheroe Round

Table, the v is its to the Valley’s towns and -villages by Santa’s sleigh are eagerly anticipated by wide-eyed' children who know Christmas is just around the corner, once they have heard Santa’s hearty “Ho-ho-ho!” His-visits give children the chance

to meet Santa and pass on their Christmas wishlist in person as he spreads his seasonal message of peace and goodwill throughout the borough. He travels aboard a spe cially decorated sleigh, built by the Round Tablers so that Santa can leave his own at home at the North Pole, gett ing a quick once-over
