Police smash down door searching fo^ man (56) already in their custody!
POLICE broke into the home of a Ciitheroe. man after his wife contacted them and said she was concerned that she could not raise him. - • But Blackburn magistrates heard S tu a r t . Crowther had actually been arrested after an incident in Whalley and was in police custody a t the time. When he eventually got home and found his front door smashed, it was the end of a night- .
mare for the 56-year-old who had never been arrested before. The court heard that during the initial inci
dent in Whalley, Crowther, who was drunk, had • taken a swing at a police officer and the officer, had punched him in the stomach before taking him to the ground. After his arrest Crowther - who had fallen over before the police arrived — was taken to hospital before being transferred
to the police station, where he was charged with thWtening behaviour. After his release he
- was standing at a cash machine where he col-. lapsed and was again taken to hospital. “Things got worse for him when he eventual
ly arrived home,” said Miss Sian Hall (defend ing). “His wife and daughter were away and they had become so concerned about his absence they contacted the police. A break- :
down in communication meant th a t rather than saying he was in custody, they broke into his house. It has cost him £300 to have the door replaced, he has lost his good name and he is still to be punished for the offence.” Crowther, of Union Street, Ciitheroe, plead
ed guilty to using threatening behaviour. He was remanded on bail for the preparation of a pre-sentence report. ,

.been hard at work in the community, this time erect- . ing the Christmas nativity crib a t the Castle Gates ; and the town’s two Christmas trees, one by the crib and the other outside the library.
. The annual task was undertaken on behalf of the
- town council on Sunday in freezing conditions in i readiness for Tuesday’s switch-on and crib dedica- tion.
For the past two years, the Tabler’s have moved
on from manually lifting and positioning the large, heavy trees using ladders and ropes. Instead they have relied on a truck-mounted lifting jib, loaned free of charge by Graham and Trevor Smith, of Riverside Roadlink and Lifting, .West Bradford. Over the years the Tablers have turned out in all
weathers and have fine-tuned the process of erect ing the trees and crib to an art, setting out early in the morning before the day’s traffic. This month also sees the annual Santa Christmas

ciitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, December 4th, 2008- 9 . Pipped to the post on interest
A [TEAM of s tu d en ts from Ciitheroe Royal Grammar: School were runners-up in a financial competition.’ :. • The four-strong team took
part in the ninth annual Target Two Point Zero - Bank of Eng land and The Times Interest Rate Challenge.
- Like the Bank of England’s
own Monetary Policy Comimit- tee, the 16 to 18-year-olds had - to consider the factors affecting the UK’s etonomic and infla tion outlook. Then they had to dedde what interest rate should
" JU H .'
be se t to meet the Govern ment’s 2.0% inflation target. After outlining the main eco
nomic issues and giving their decision, the team was then questioned by a judging panel.; The grammar school team,
who recommended an interest rate of 2.25%, were just pipped to the post by a team from Bolton School Boys’ Division who recommended an interest' rate of 2.5% compared with the official rate of 3% set by the Monetary Policy Committee on November 6th.
