Blackburn College

THE success of the Team GB cycling squad in the Olympics proves the rea son why Ribble Valley’s Brian Cookson was given an OBE. Mr Cookson, whose home is

in Billington, is president of British Cycling, the national organisation which has played a key role in developing cycling in this country to the point where it is a world-beat er.

Its riders took a total of

eight golds, four silvers and two bronzes. Chris Hoy took three golds, and Pendle’s Steven Burke got an unex pected bronze. The fact'is that, when Mr

Cookson took over the chair manship and presidency of the British Cycling Federa tion a dozen of so years ago, it was a failing organisation. Mr Cookson, who was over

in Beijing to ■witness much of the success and who played host to Princess Anne, admits: “We were absolutely amazed, really!” Taking on his role when he

did was good timing. The Manchester Velodrome had just opened and lottery fund ing was about to become available to develop British sports including cycling. British Cycling was deter mined to drive the UK’s team

^ t o a better shape, and also M get more people involved in ^he sport and cycling general

ly. Mr Cookson, who is Pendle

Council’s executive director (regeneration), said: “ By 2012, we wanted'to be the leading nation in cycling... and that was before London had been selected.” : Surprisingly - but pleasing

ly - it has happened four ' years early.

He says his role is pretty

much back room these days. Mr Cookson said: “We'are

now viewed as a model for other sports. The Manchester Velodrome has made a big dif ference in training.” Initially built as part of

Manchester’s bid to host the Olympics and stuck on its own, it was seen as something of a white elephant. Then at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Chorley’s Jason Queally won. a gold in the one kilometre time trial. His time was slightly over one minute- one second. Mr Cookson said: “As a result, in a minute it went from white elephant to gold medal factory.” British riders have domi

nated the track scene over the past few years and Mr Cook son said: “We feared they may have reached their peak too soon, but the trainers did get it right.” In Beijing, Mr Cookson

managed to get in some sight seeing. Having to take an hour’s taxi ride each way between the hotel and the Bird’s Nest Stadium proved something of a scary experi ence. “ They certainly put cyclists at risk!” he said. He was also asked by the

Olympics officials to escort Princess Anne to the velo- . drome. While she was there, Bradley Wiggins had an unsuccessful day, but Chris :■ Hoy and Victoria Pendleton , won golds and Jason Kenny a • silver. Now British Cycling is ’

looking forward to London,- 2012. Mr Cookson said: “ I ' think we are confident about London. However, we ha've.j^ got some good young.com- petitors -

the older ridersare

now looking behind them to'' see who is catching up.”
