^ Stonyhurst stargazers to feature in new BBC series

STONYHURST stargazers and the historic college’s famous observatory • will feature in.a new BBC 2 series on climate change starting next Sunday, September 14th.: “The History of Climate Change”

will be aired at 7 p.m. and will feature the important meteorological research undertaken by three of Stonyhurst’s astronomer priests during the Victori an and Edwardian eras. I t -will be pre sented by Dr Iain Stewart, who brought us the recent series called “Earth: The Power of Planet”. A BBC film crew visited the college

last April and filmed footage of the observatory, which is well known for its scientific activities, including mete

orological records and the observing of sunspots. ’ - Stonyhurst’s sunspots and atmos

pheric temperature observations cover some of the longest periods on record. The BBC is interested in sunspots in particular because they are a measure of solar activity and the series will look at the sun’s potential influence on climate. Pictured is Dr Iain Stewart during

filming in the Stonyhurst Observato ry. To demonstrate the intensity of the sun’s rays he held a leaf up to the powerful telescope and watched it burn, warning viewers of the forth coming BBC2 series never to look directly at the sun.

Hopes high for weather HOPING for good weather on Satur day are residents of Crowtrees Gardens. They are holding a late summer fair
