A FORMER High Sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire, Mr Christo pher Parker (87) died a t Browsholme Hall on Tues day. Mr,Parker will be remem
bered in the farming commu nity for his ideas and motiva tion behind the move of Clitheroe Action Mart from the town centre to Lincoln Way. Approached by the farm
directors in the mid-1980s, he became a major shareholder of the company, raised addi tional finance and managed the construction of the new auction mart. As chairman, he gently
‘steered the company through troubled times of BSE and Foot and Mouth crisis while encouraging diversification into car boot sales, a unique and hugely popular fur ‘n’ feather on Wednesdays, and, more recently, Silverwood’s antiques auctions. However the restoration of
Tractors trail for charity
AROUND 45 vintage and classic tractors and their owners, including several from the Ribble Valley, took part in a charity run. They gathered at West
Marton, between Gisbum and Skipton, for the start of the tractor run organ ised by Craven farmers and local tractor enthusi asts on Sunday. Drivers were rewarded
with a spectacular and varied route as they meandered through Craven villages from West Marton to Malham, returning via Bordley and Gargrave. ■ Spectators along the
route enjoyed the sights and sounds of some rare tractors, ranging from a Silver Jubilee Ford to a 1960s Fordson Super Major. The event also raised
£662 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Our picture shows the

Talks over better walking in town centre plan
CHANGES to roads and pave ments in Moor Lane in Clitheroe are on the agenda at the next Lancashire Local Ribble Valley meeting. At the meeting, councillors will
receive an update on the scheme, which forms part of the town centre redevelopment and is cur rently out for statutory public consultation. Councillors will also be updat- '
ed on the public consultation now taking place and will make a final decision early October. Committee chairman County
Coun. Chris Holtom, said: “The Moor Lane project should deliver benefits to pedestrians and shop- - pers an J enhance the street scene of Clitheroe. . “ I am very pleased that the
committee will shortly be in a position to make the final deci sion.”
Other items for discussion and
decision include traffic calming in Branch Road, Mellor Brook,, traffic issues in Barker Lane and Long Row, Mellor Brook, local councillor grants and gateway, grants to support community groups. The meeting will be on

bridge. Browsholme Hall, inherited by his son, Robert, was then almost uninhabit able. It had foul drainage and lacked a clean water supply, safe electricity or any of the modern conveniences of liv
ing. Another significant historic
house, built in 1507, together with its unique collection of historic contents was at seri ous risk of being lost. Howev-- er with foresight and imagina tion Mr Parker and his wife, Diana, restored the hall to a family home. They welcomed the public
from the very early days to see a unique part of Lan cashire’s heritage. The Parker family have a
Browsholme Hall after the death of his cousin. Col. Robert Parker, in 1975, was his main preoccupation after retirement as a chartered sur veyor, with Bidwells of Cam
strong connection with Waddington, having since 1680 acquired the A.dvowson of St Helen’s Church from the Tempest family. Mr Parker not only
assumed an active role with St Helen’s, but initiated the modernisation and extension
of the almshouses, which his forebears had established in the late 17th Century. The ' Almshouses now
accommodate 25 women in self-contained houses in prize winning grounds. However Mr Parker’s
inipact was not limited to local issues, having been pri- inarily responsible for the cre ation of Martlesham Heath - a new model village on an abandoned aerodrome in Suf folk, complete with village green and it s own parish council. Throughout his life he had a
deep understanding and love of the countryside being a keen sportsman and enthusi ast of gardens and woodlands. A funeral service will be
